HYANNIS, MASSACHUSETTS — A family returning from a New Year’s Day midnight church service narrowly escaped serious injury early this morning when their vehicle skidded in sudden heavy snow and crashed into a utility pole on North Street near the West End Rotary.
The incident unfolded shortly before 3:00 a.m. on January 1, 2026, under snowy conditions. Officials at the scene determined that impaired driving was not a factor, classifying it as an accident, possibly weather related. One occupant sustained a minor head wound and was evaluated by Hyannis Fire Department Rescue but did not require hospital transport.
All parties remained on scene and fully cooperated with police and firefighters.
ABOVE: The driver of a white SUV allegedly fled from a minor traffic collision near the intersection of Route 28 and Bearses Way last evening. Police caught up to the fleeing SUV and eventually arrested the female driver for driving with a suspended driver’s license, according to sources. Further details, including the suspect’s name, were not available at the time of this report.
For first responders, it was relatively busy last evening across the Cape with the normal litany of incidents expected on New Year’s Eve, such as domestic disturbances, traffic collisions, drunk driving arrests, and individuals being taken into custody after having had too much to drink. In one instance, the driver of a heavy-duty F-550 truck equipped with a snowplow was arrested for drunk driving on West Main Street in Hyannis after police received reports of erratic driving, including leaving the roadway and driving over curbs.
