Two paintings in another great auction supporting Cape Cod artists: the Great Brush off 2026 benefitting the Cahoon Museum of American Art

The Great Brush Off auction to benefit the Cahoon Museum of American art is now open for viewing, and you find two works of mine included:

Seeking the Limelights, watercolor 2026

Coastal Chaos, watercolor + ink, 2026

The Silent auction opens on June 27 at 9am and there’s an open house and artists reception that day, too. There’s a Live Auction Party on July 11th that requires a ticket.

The Cahoon Museum of American Art is a gem in Cotuit, MA, that features local artists (there’s always work on display by Ralph and Martha Cahoon) as well as great American artisans and their place in history.

The current show features Nantucket Baskets (haven’t seen it yet) but the Tiffany’s Gardens in Glass show that just closed was spectacular – I visited it three times.

Irrational Exuberance, Watercolor 2024

The Arts Foundation of Cape Cod’s annual summer auction is an annual fundraiser I always look forward to, and I am pleased as punch that this vibrant piece, “Irrational Exuberance” (watercolor on paper, 18×13, framed) was sold to a collector who has been very good to me. This year they offered a truly stunning display of works by local artists.

A portion of the proceeds from all of the sales goes to support artists work on Cape Cod – where painting is easy but living is expensive.

BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS — A 71-year-old man from Hyannis is among seven Massachusetts men taken into custody in a targeted FBI operation aimed at stopping child sexual exploitation around the World Cup, according to a FBI media statement.
FBI Boston’s Child Exploitation–Human Trafficking Task Force, working with Massachusetts State Police, arrested the men between June 12 and June 16, 2026, as part of heightened efforts to combat human trafficking and the sexual exploitation of children before, during, and after World Cup matches.
Gerald Sabatinelli, 71, of Hyannis, was arrested along with six other men from across the state. The suspects were arraigned in Brockton District Court on state charges of sex for a fee with a child under 18, enticement of a child under 16, and attempted rape of a child.
The full list of those arrested includes:
Julio Aguilar, 42, of Saugus
Kenneth M. Berry, 45, of Middleboro
Manjil Bhusal, 21, of Somerville
Jonathan Matthew William Durocher, 34, of Brockton
Trevon Hubbard, 31, of Middleboro
Krish R. Patel, 26, of Quincy
Gerald Sabatinelli, 71, of Hyannis
All seven men are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
The operation involved special agents and task force officers from FBI Boston along with officers from the East Bridgewater, New Bedford, Peabody, and Randolph Police Departments. Additional assistance came from the Boston Police Department, Brockton Police Department, Massachusetts State Police, and the FBI Albany Division.
The arrests underscore the FBI’s focus on disrupting individuals seeking to sexually exploit children during major international sporting events.

ICE Arrests Two Criminal Illegal Aliens in Hyannis Wednesday

According to an ICE Spokesperson’s statement to Hyannis News:
“On June 24, ICE Boston arrested Carlos Oswaldo Vasquez-Silva and Kevin Marcelo Quiroz Torres, criminal illegal aliens from Ecuador, during targeted operations in Hyannis, Massachusetts.
“Vasquez-Silva’s criminal history includes a conviction for possession of false identity documents. He last entered the United States illegally on an unknown date and at an unknown location, and was previously removed to Ecuador on June 14, 2019, following a final order of removal.
“Quiroz-Torres’ criminal history includes a pending charge for a traffic offense. He entered the United States illegally Nov. 11, 2023, under Biden’s “catch and release” policy that allowed millions of unvetted illegal aliens to be let loose on American streets and was ordered removed by an immigration judge on June 28, 2024.
“Both will be held in ICE custody pending removal.
“Under President Trump and Secretary Mullin, criminal illegal aliens are not welcome in the U.S. ICE is working diligently to remove these violent, dangerous offenders from our communities.”

Operation Red Card: Six Arrested in World Cup Human Trafficking Sting

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — A multi-agency law enforcement operation has resulted in the arrest of six men accused of seeking commercial sex acts and attempting to exploit minors during the FIFA World Cup.
Dubbed “Operation Red Card,” the enforcement action was conducted by the FBI Boston Division, Rhode Island State Police, Massachusetts State Police, Naval Criminal Investigative Service, Rhode Island Attorney General’s Office, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office. The operation specifically targeted individuals looking to engage in human trafficking-related crimes amid the heightened activity surrounding the international soccer tournament.
“While major international sporting events bring significant economic and cultural benefits, they can also create opportunities for traffickers and those who exploit vulnerable populations,” the participating agencies stated.
The Arrests
Richard Lallier, 34, of Rehoboth, Massachusetts, was arraigned in U.S. District Court on June 18 and is being held without bail. He faces three federal charges:

Attempted Enticement of a Minor (18 U.S.C. § 2422(b))
Attempted Interstate Travel for Sexual Contact with a Minor Under 16 (18 U.S.C. § 2423(b))
Attempted Transmission of Obscene Material to a Minor (18 U.S.C. § 1470)

Joshua Lincoln, 27, of North Providence, Rhode Island, was arraigned on June 17 and released on personal recognizance. He is charged with Indecent Solicitation of a Minor and Electronically Disseminating Indecent Material to a Minor.
Jacob Palazzo, 26, of Cranston, Rhode Island, was arraigned on June 17 and released on personal recognizance. He faces a charge of Indecent Solicitation of a Minor.
Franco Miccoli, 60, of Johnston, Rhode Island, was arraigned on June 17 and released on personal recognizance. He is charged with Procurement of Sexual Conduct for a Fee.
Travis Shaw, 38, of Tiverton, Rhode Island, was arrested on a warrant and arraigned on June 22. He was released on personal recognizance and faces a charge of Electronically Disseminating Indecent Material to a Minor.
Rocky Joseph, 38, of Central Falls, Rhode Island, was arrested on a warrant with FBI assistance and arraigned on June 22. He was released on personal recognizance and faces a charge of Electronically Disseminating Indecent Material to a Minor.
Law enforcement emphasized that the operation is part of an ongoing effort to deter human trafficking, identify victims, and hold offenders accountable during the World Cup.
The Rhode Island State Police and partner agencies are urging the public to stay vigilant. Human trafficking often occurs in plain sight and may involve individuals who appear controlled, coerced, or unable to speak freely.
Anyone who suspects human trafficking activity is encouraged to contact law enforcement or call the National Human Trafficking Hotline at 1-888-373-7888. Tips can be submitted confidentially 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

WEST YARMOUTH, MASSACHUSETTS — A dark-colored SUV struck two pedestrians on busy Route 28 Tuesday night before speeding away from the scene, leaving one person injured and police with almost no leads.
Yarmouth police and firefighters rushed to 518 Route 28, near Springer Lane, around 9:20 p.m. on June 23 after reports of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle. Initial radio traffic indicated one victim was conscious with a possible shoulder injury. Arriving crews quickly learned two people had been hit and the driver had fled.
One pedestrian was transported to Cape Cod Hospital, banged up, but with injuries not considered life-threatening at the time of this report. Because the patient is from Kazakhstan, responders requested a translator be arranged at Cape Cod Hospital in advance. The emergency room was placed on trauma alert.
The second pedestrian was evaluated at the scene by Yarmouth Fire Department ambulance personnel and did not require hospital transport.
Police have little to go on beyond the description of a dark-colored SUV. The investigation remains active.

CENTERVILLE, MASSACHUSETTS — A quiet family neighborhood was rocked last night when a speeding Dodge Ram pickup truck slammed into a tree on Quisett Road near the Centerville-Hyannis village line.
Barnstable Police say 21-year-old Didar Shapenov of Marlboro was behind the wheel. He was taken to Cape Cod Hospital with minor injuries, where officers arrested him and charged him with operating under the influence of liquor, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, and speeding.
Hyannis Firefighters responded to the scene to clean up fluids and tend to the driver. A sheriff’s crime scene unit later photographed the wrecked pickup truck and the injured tree.
Neighbors heard the loud crash and came outside during a light rain to investigate. Many were stunned by how fast the truck had been traveling through their normally low-speed residential area.
It remains unclear why Shapenov was driving at such a high rate of speed in the quiet neighborhood.
HN Reminder: The initial details contained in the above report are based on radio transmissions and information from police sources. The defendant is presumed to be innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

Carver Man Admits Guilt in Brutal Multi-Year Dogfighting Conspiracy: Pit Bulls Scarred, Injured, and Killed for Sport and Gambling

BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS — A 49-year-old Carver man has agreed to plead guilty to conspiring to participate in an animal fighting venture, admitting his central role in a years-long dogfighting ring that bred, trained, fought, and gambled on pit bull-type dogs while inflicting severe cruelty on the animals.
Corey Elliott (note: no booking photo provided by the D.O.J.) entered the plea agreement with federal prosecutors for violating the federal Animal Welfare Act. A plea hearing has not yet been scheduled. He was arrested in April 2026. The U.S. government is also seeking civil forfeiture of four pit bull-type dogs seized from his Carver residence in June 2025.
(Note: 13 “pit bull-type” dogs were seized from a separate individual in an earlier part of the investigation, according to court documents…)
According to the charging documents, Elliott and his co-conspirator ran a close partnership spanning several years. They communicated extensively about arranging fights, discussing outcomes and injuries, placing wagers, and coordinating the buying, selling, and conditioning of dogs specifically for fighting.
The Horrors of Dogfighting (Excerpts from the D.O.J.’s case)
Dogfighting operations like the one Elliott participated in subject animals to systematic brutality. Court documents detail the reality:
“A dogfight occurs when two dogs are knowingly released by their handlers in a controlled environment to attack each other and fight. The fight ends when one dog withdraws, when a handler ‘picks up’ their dog and forfeits the match, or when one or both dogs die.”
Dogs are selectively bred and trained for “gameness” — the drive to keep fighting despite traumatic or mortal injury. Fighters chase “Champion” or “Grand Champion” status by winning three or five fights. Losers often face the worst fate:
“It is not uncommon for dogs that lose matches to be killed in cruel, torturous, and inhumane ways as punishment.”
Before matches, dogs endure a rigorous six-to-eight-week “keep” involving intense running, spring poles and flirt poles to build jaw strength and aggression, and sometimes performance-enhancing drugs or anabolic steroids. Younger dogs are frequently “rolled” — tested in short, brutal fights to assess their fighting spirit.
The physical toll is permanent and visible. As described in the documents:
“Dogs who have been fought may have scars, puncture wounds, swollen faces, or mangled ears. Scars from organized dogfights are commonly found on the face and front legs, as well as on hind ends and thighs.”
Evidence from the Investigation
In June 2023, a search warrant at the co-conspirator’s residence uncovered multiple pit bull-type dogs and extensive evidence of organized dogfighting. Several dogs showed clear signs of prior fights:

One had “severe, deep scarring around the neck and on the left front leg.”
Another exhibited “scarring on the front and hind legs, face, neck and head, as well as notching and scarring on the left ear,” plus luxating patella (dislocating kneecaps) in both knees, worn teeth, and masses on the body.
A third dog had “scarring on the head and both front legs, notching on both ears, and scarring and/or hair loss on both back legs.”

One underweight dog died after seizure (believed to have had cancer), but had already suffered scarring and other injuries consistent with fighting life. Dogs were routinely housed separately in locked cages or chained with heavy collars to prevent unplanned fights. Many were underweight, had dirty ears, long nails, parasites (including giardia and roundworm eggs), and tick-borne diseases. None appeared spayed or neutered.
Seized items painted a complete picture of the operation: spring poles, flirt poles, treadmills/slat mills/carpet mills for conditioning, break sticks (used to pry dogs’ jaws apart), bite sleeves, digital scales for match weigh-ins, and extensive veterinary supplies — including antibiotics, painkillers, wound care materials, steroids, and even fertility medications — many expired. These supplies allowed operators to treat fight injuries themselves rather than risk veterinary scrutiny.
Dogfighting literature, books such as The Pit Bull Bible and The World of Fighting Dogs, back issues of Sporting Dog Journal, pedigrees tracking bloodlines and fight wins, and training regimens were also recovered.
Elliott’s own residence yielded parallel evidence. The four seized pit bull-type dogs were housed separately in locked cage structures (see above surveillance images). Several had scarring. Investigators found training equipment, veterinary supplies, and dogfighting literature. Elliott himself messaged another dogfighter via WhatsApp about “training dogs to fight, the planning and results of dogfights, injuries sustained by and the death of fighting dogs and disposing of dog carcasses.”
The Inhumane Cost and Legal Consequences
These operations generate profit through illegal gambling and the sale or breeding of “game” dogs. Dogs that underperform or lose fights are often discarded or killed.
The four dogs seized from Elliott’s home are now in the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service and being cared for by a contractor. Under the Animal Welfare Act, animals involved in fighting ventures are subject to forfeiture.
Elliott faces up to five years in federal prison, three years of supervised release, and a fine of up to $250,000. Sentencing will be determined by a federal judge using the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines.
U.S. Attorney Leah B. Foley, along with officials from the USDA Office of Inspector General, Massachusetts State Police, and the Animal Rescue League of Boston, announced the plea agreement. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Danial E. Bennett, with the civil forfeiture handled by the Asset Recovery Unit and DOJ’s Wildlife and Marine Resources Section.
The details in the charging documents and civil forfeiture complaint are allegations. Elliott is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. However, his agreement to plead guilty reflects acceptance of responsibility for his role in this cruel conspiracy.
This case underscores the hidden brutality behind dogfighting rings — where dogs endure isolation, forced aggression training, repeated physical trauma, infections, and often death — all for human profit and spectacle. Such operations can exist even in ordinary neighborhoods across Massachusetts and beyond.
