The Barnstable Superior Court verdict closes a dark chapter in Falmouth’s recent history, marked by a violent dispute over alleged stolen narcotics that escalated into a fatal stabbing outside a Davisville Road home. The case traces back to September 22, 2022, when Falmouth Police responded to an alarming 911 call reporting a disturbance at 250 Davisville Road around 6:25 p.m. Officers arrived to find a chilling scene: Douglas M. Rose, a 41-year-old local resident, suffering from multiple stab wounds. Despite immediate medical aid from Falmouth Fire & Rescue, Rose was transported to Falmouth Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. Initial reports from the Cape & Islands District Attorney’s Office, as detailed in a Hyannis News report and video published the following day (see earlier HN videos below), confirmed Rose’s death and highlighted the ongoing homicide investigation led by Falmouth Police and Massachusetts State Police. According to trial evidence presented in Barnstable Superior Court, the murder stemmed from a grudge over alleged stolen drugs. The day before the attack, Rose had allegedly taken narcotics from Kimberly McCarthy, who had received them from Charee Rainey to sell on his behalf. On the evening of the incident, McCarthy drove Vincent Purdie, Rainey, and Miller to Rose’s address in pursuit of retribution. Rainey forcibly entered through a side door, chasing Rose out the front, where Miller was positioned. Miller seized Rose, and together with Rainey, the two men are alleged to have repeatedly stabbed him before fleeing in McCarthy’s vehicle. According to media statements from the DA’s office, prosecutors built an effective case using a combination of eyewitness testimony, cell site location data placing Miller’s and Rainey’s phones near McCarthy’s home and the crime scene, and forensic evidence. A knife recovered near the homicide site tested positive for both Rose’s and Miller’s DNA, sealing the link to the defendant. The homicide investigation quickly gained momentum. By September 30, 2022, as reported earlier by Hyannis News, arrests were announced: Miller was apprehended in East Bridgewater and charged with murder, while Rainey was captured by U.S. Marshals in Fort Worth, Texas, based on tips from local detectives. Rainey, then 40 and from Boston, waived extradition and was arraigned in Falmouth District Court on October 6, 2022, following his return to Massachusetts. Early statements from then-District Attorney Michael O’Keefe noted that the dispute involved narcotics and approximately $600, underscoring the petty yet deadly origins of the violence. The case advanced to indictments on March 28, 2023, when a grand jury charged McCarthy, 52, of East Falmouth; Miller, then 42; and Rainey, 41, of Brighton, with murder, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, breaking and entering, kidnapping, and conspiracy. Hyannis News covered the development, emphasizing the “brutal slaying” and the collaborative efforts of state and local police throughout the winter investigation. Assistant District Attorney Michael Giardino was initially assigned to prosecute. Miller’s trial commenced with jury selection on October 30, 2025, under current District Attorney Robert J. Galibois. Evidence presentation ran from November 5 to November 18, with closing arguments on November 19. After deliberations spanning two days, the jury convicted Miller on all counts: first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and breaking and entering in the daytime for a felony, placing a person in fear. Judge Pasquale imposed the mandatory life sentence without parole on December 2. In a statement, Galibois praised the Falmouth Police Department, Massachusetts State Police Detectives Unit, and the prosecution team—including Assistant District Attorneys Courtney Leigh Scalice and Kevin Burke, along with Victim Witness Assistant Deborah McCoy — for their “professionalism and persistence.” He also extended gratitude to the jury “for their careful consideration of the evidence and their service to our community.” While Miller’s conviction perhaps brings some closure, the saga continues. Charee Rainey faces similar murder charges following an August 2025 mistrial (according to online sources), with his retrial set for March 30, 2026. Kimberly McCarthy, the getaway driver, accepted a plea deal for manslaughter in exchange for her testimony, receiving an 8-12 year sentence, according to a recent Cape Cod Times report. There has been no mention on whether charges will be filed against Vincent Purdie, the fourth passenger. The case underscores the relentless pursuit of justice amid Cape Cod’s struggles with drug-related violence. HN NOTE: This outcome serves as a stark reminder of how quickly disputes over illicit substances and petty sums can turn deadly, leaving communities shaken and families shattered.
