CENTERVILLE, MASSACHUSETTS – A chaotic scene unfolded on Bumps River Road Thursday night, October 9, 2025, when a Ford F-250 Super Duty pickup veered off the roadway and flattening what appeared to be a decades-old suspected maple tree. The crash, reported at approximately 9:45 p.m. near the intersection of Bumps River Road and Longfellow Drive, prompted a swift response from Barnstable Police and Centerville-Osterville-Marstons Mills (C-O-MM) Firefighters. Emergency responders arrived to find the heavy-duty pickup with significant front-end damage, lodged atop the toppled suspected maple. The vehicle had jumped the sidewalk before colliding with the tree, snapping its root system and scattering debris across the roadway. Firefighters deployed chainsaws to clear the tree’s limbs, which had blocked the street, while two tow operators worked together to extricate the truck due to its considerable weight and the tangled wreckage. The incident forced a complete closure of Bumps River Road for over an hour and a half. A C-O-MM Fire Department ambulance crew evaluated the driver, identified as Alexander Avila, 31, of Centerville, who did not require hospitalization. Following an investigation, Barnstable Police arrested Avila on charges of Operating Under the Influence of Liquor, Negligent Operation of a Motor Vehicle, and Marked Lanes Violation. A member of the sheriff’s crime scene unit documented evidence at the scene with photographs. No further details or photos regarding the arrest were available at the time of this report. [DEVELOPING] HN reminder: All defendants are presumed to be innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
