Surfer, filmmaker, and multi-platinum singer-songwriter Jack Johnson is the subject of the appropriately titled documentary “SURFILMUSIC,” playing at the M.V. Film Center on August 16. The film opens with Johnson performing a moving rendition of his song “Better Together” in an enormous arena to an enthusiastic crowd. Even if you are new to Johnson’s music, it’s clear that we are hearing a talented, heartfelt musician.
Edgartown August 6, Cynthia Thomas, formerly known as Cynthia Margolis, sold 24 Atwood Circle to Mildred Austin for $2,588,000.
Someone asked me last week, “Why do you always book the First Friday V.H. fire dancer for the hottest day of the year?” I don’t know if it’s just coincidence, or if Miss Molly Dazzle brings the heat along with her, but last Friday was absolutely steaming all day long. Thank you to everyone who came out in the heat anyway, especially to all of our performers, vendors, and volunteers. From puppies and pops to performances and a new passport activity, we can now check off our biggest First Friday…
“I was rich, if not in money, in sunny hours and summer days.” –Henry David Thoreau It makes me feel rich to go to the beach in the early morning when there is nobody there, walk along the shore, breathe the air, and float in the sea. Then I go back to work, of course, but later I go watch the sunset at East Chop. I never take for granted the beauty of this Island.
The 164th Agricultural Fair will have opened by the time everyone is reading this week’s column. Hours are 10 am to 11 pm, and there will surely be enthusiasts who plan to spend the entire four days visiting every exhibit, observing every judging, attending every event, playing every game, and riding every ride. Oh, and eating at every food booth along the way. It looks like the weather will be good. There may be a sprinkle on Thursday, but probably not, and it should cool off nicely. The weather…
Between the Agricultural Fair, Illumination Night, Oak Bluffs fireworks, and every other invitation we’ve received, Edgartown’s mid-August calendar is as full as its restaurants. I dared to try to get a table for three last Thursday as a walk-in with no reservation but a lovely smile and a kind heart, and after trying a few spots that were packed to the brim, ended up at Alchemy for girls’ night. If you get a chance, grab a seat at the bar and have a delicious drink and their Crispy Scallop…
This week, the Martha’s Vineyard Agricultural Fair opens. The barn will be filled with animals. The food, rides, games, and booths will rise from the ground. Vast teams of volunteers spend hours receiving and sorting thousands of entries. Figuring out the online system isn’t easy, and May Boyd fixed tags like the seasoned rock star she is. Who knew so many people shared the same name? Hall manager Susanne Cronin and her assistant, Nancy Roger, expertly manage teams of volunteers who spend…
The heat of summer is surely here. The air has a heaviness to it. The breezes bring no coolness with them, but they blow through the trees, making the leaves dance beautifully. The heat requires a slowing down, just as the flowers are giving us delights to ponder. Charley and I stay away from the crowds as much as we can, glorying in the joys of fresh tomato sandwiches as we sit on our porch, admiring the garden and the brilliantly colored finches, warblers, and jays who come to the birdfeeder. There…
