Three Poems By Susan Puciul seed snowdrops burn white in the dark swells of this land wrap a cave around me then I will be caught a soft thing forced to be a seed hand when you’re lonely as a cloud your hands at least they have each other nest catbirds: chalk grey mother in morning sun black eye edged in tenderness four mouths open in leaping greed for all the treasures of the world Susan Puciul is a member of the Cleaveland House Poets. Her work has appeared in many poetry journals and anthologies.…

“In early June the world of leaf and blade and flowers explodes, and every sunset is different.” –John Steinbeck Memorial Day weekend was rainy, which was too bad for the many folks visiting and trying to sightsee — but hopefully it was good for the shops and restaurants. And we really needed the rain! The highlight of my weekend was getting over to the VFW to hear Gordon Healy sing the blues with the incomparable band of Don Groover, Barbara Puciul, Buck Shank, and Tess Walsh…
Continuing my stint on Beach St. Extension, I can report: Visitors are arriving! So many people pre- and post-holiday visiting M.V. for the first time ever, or the first time in a long while. I was also blessed with a visit from a respectable tabby who wandered through our open doorway to meow at me … before continuing on its way. Another (human) visitor staying just a stone’s throw from the Steamship Authority noted, “That boat horn is so loud — I didn’t ask for a wake-up call!” When…
May 30, 1868, was the first official Memorial Day ceremony. Originally called Decoration Day, it was held at Arlington National Cemetery, where 16,000 Civil War soldiers had been buried. Rep. James Garfield, a former major general, and eventual 20th U.S. president, gave the commemorative speech, stating, “What other spot so fitting for their last resting place as this under the shadow of the Capitol saved by their valor?” Arlington National Cemetery was laid out on the grounds surrounding Arlington…
Starting off with two very important pieces of news I missed last week: Celeste Zyla was born to Edgartonian mom Tilma Zyla on May 4. A sweet new baby that was introduced to us during Porchfest weekend: What could be more local than that? Then a round of applause for Joan Connolly, who had a birthday on May 23, turning 96 years old — cheers to such a long, incredible life! Reflecting on community milestones like that make me sit a bit with the thought of a full arc of life in a small town like…
Last Wednesday, members from the Wampanoag Tribe of Aquinnah (Gay Head) and the Chilmark School community, students, and teachers gathered on the campus for the inaugural raising of the tribe’s flag on the newly erected flagpole that stands next to the one flying our American flag. Two nations side by side waving in the sky. On Friday the Chilmark School children marched to the sea, played music, and tossed blossoms into the sea honoring soldiers who fell during our nation’s wars. With…
Oliver Boldrin da Silva Keriane Boldrin and Wellington da Silva of Oak Bluffs announce the birth of a son, Oliver Boldrin da Silva, on May 21, 2026, at Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. Oliver weighed 3 pounds, 6.5 ounces. The post Birth announcement appeared first on The Martha's Vineyard Times.
We began last week with the troubling news that Nycolas de Al Varenga Lima, 15 years old, and his father, Rogerio da Silva Lima, had been detained by the U.S. Coast Guard and transferred to ICE custody. The two are members of the Vineyard’s Brazilian immigrant community. Nycolas is a student at the M.V. Regional High School. Both are respected and loved. The news brought a swift response from the community. MV LUCE sprang into action and filed a habeas corpus petition that kept them in Massachusetts.…
The weekly cribbage chaos continued, and once again the battle at the top of the standings is tighter than a nervous player holding a double run and pretending they know what they’re doing. This week Bill Russell remains the top contender, while Collin Evanson and Jack Silvia find themselves in a full-blown cribbage standoff tied for second place, with a whopping 172 points each. Two players, same score, same mission, and probably the same suspicious side-eye every time someone cuts a jack. Meanwhile,…
