Heard on Main Street: See you at the fair! Where do you go first? Watch the animals or wonder how a youngster could raise a healthy goat? Or check to see if you got a ribbon for your art or jam, or perhaps a gorgeous quilt? Don’t forget the flowers or colorful vegetables. The wonders created with fresh veggies are one of my favorites. Enjoy the joyous squeals of children, and the delicious food and drinks. And especially those friends and even relatives you only see at the fair. The Island has…
The 163rd Agricultural Fair opens today. For the next four days, West Tisbury will be the destination of choice for everyone on the Island. There is always so much anticipation for the fair. It’s the big event of the summer. Planned throughout the year by the Ag Society, it also fills every home with plans and projects for its entries, then rushing to get them in on time. The fair booklet is filled with possibilities, some with specifics of size and number, some loosely categorized. I won’t…
“When summer opens, I see how fast it matures, and fear it will be short; but after the heat of July and August, I am reconciled, like one who has had his swing, to the cool of autumn.” –Ralph Waldo Emerson I am not quite ready for the cool of autumn, but I think it is safe to say that we are all ready for the Island to calm down! August has been a lot! A lot of people, a lot of events, a lot of traffic, and a lot of fun (once you got through the traffic). I find balance in August…
Paul R. Cheek Sr. of New York City passed away on Sunday, August 10, 2025, in Edgartown, aboard his boat Athena. He was in his favorite place — on the water, surrounded by the beauty and peace he loved most. Born in Greensboro, N.C., Paul was a lifelong sailor with a love for 12-meter sailboats, and the 12-meter class. He was known for his love of music, generosity, hospitality, and belief that “life is all about the journey.” Paul cherished time with family and friends in New York Harbor,…
Frank LoRusso of Chilmark passed away unexpectedly on July 21, 2025. Frank was doing one of the things he loved best, clamming with his best friend. He was 79 years old. Frank grew up in Cliffside Park, N.J. As a teenager, he worked as a butcher, and as a carpenter in his uncle’s home improvement business. It was during this time that Frank met the love of his life, Judy. They did everything together, and just celebrated their 58th anniversary in early July. Frank was a self-starter, to say the…
My dad, Donald Wayne Madeiras, died at home after a brief illness on July 16, 2025, at the age of 81. He was born on Martha’s Vineyard on Dec. 30, 1943, to Roland and Carolyn Madeiras, and raised in Oak Bluffs with his brothers David and Danny. Dad graduated from Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School in 1962, and immediately went into the Army as a truck mechanic. He didn’t talk much about his military experience, except it was there that he developed his hatred for pancakes, or blowout…

Truly couldn’t ask for a…

Coming into a busy week with Illumination night and fireworks in O.B., and the Ag Fair. This week the West Tisbury Farmers Market moves to the grounds of the Grange. We are busy preparing our fair entries and helping out in the hall. There are more than 3,000 entries, and hundreds of volunteers choosing joy and delight amid the hard work it takes. The entries are spectacular. The teams organizing and displaying each department are heroic. Cheering one another on, celebrating creative solutions…
