I love every minute of this time of year, especially the illusion of living in a Wolf Kahn painting as I observe the leaves emerging in our woods. Colors change every day, and light moves across and through thickets of branches. Pink, lavender, an orange-tinged green, finally a bright, almost-chartreuse that contrasts with the bits of sky still visible. These leaves will darken soon, and our woods will take on the closed, dull green of summer that obscures everything. I am watching our beech trees…
Heard on Main Street: Nobody cares if you can’t dance well. Just get up and dance. Tomorrow’s annual March to the Sea by the schoolchildren to fill the harbor with memorial flowers is a most beautiful and appropriate event. The kids will appreciate your attendance at their parade. They leave the school at 12:15 pm. The M.V. Film Society and the Vineyard Conservation Society open this weekend’s film festival this evening with a reception at 6:30 pm at the Film Society, followed by the film…
“Don’t just teach your children to read. Teach them to question what they read. Teach them to question everything.” —George Carlin Memorial Day is here! I read somewhere that instead of mourning their death, we should express gratitude that such people lived. I like that. The 31st annual Memorial 5K Road Race to benefit Hospice of Martha’s Vineyard will take place…

Truthfully, we do but we don’t, and I feel like the earlier we can come to terms with that sentiment, the easier life will unfold. I’ll take a note from my fellow columnist, Joanna Lambert of Oak Bluffs, and her way of doing things and share the meaningful quote, “The trouble is, you think you have time,” attributed to Jack Kornfield. So let this be the moment…
