HYANNIS, MASSACHUSETTS — A pickup truck slammed into a tree and tore through a Sea Street neighborhood early Sunday, leaving a debris field of wreckage, damaged poles, streetlights and fencing before the driver was charged with operating under the influence. Barnstable police began receiving calls around 1:22 a.m. after the crash woke residents near Gosnold Street. Officers and firefighters arrived to find a sprawling scene: a heavily damaged, barely recognizable pickup, downed poles and lights, and shattered fencing surrounding a private home. Neighbors told Hyannis News the impact jolted them awake. The first responders found the driver standing in the driver’s-side doorway of the wrecked truck. He had apparently escaped serious injury but swayed as he spoke with officers. There appeared to be a slight language barrier as the driver showed an emerging command of English. He initially refused hospital treatment, but officers and firefighters coaxed the unsteady man onto a stretcher. He was taken to Cape Cod Hospital with injuries not believed to be life-threatening. A Barnstable County Sheriff’s Crime Scene Unit member photographed the wreckage. Commanders called the Department of Public Works to help clean up what looked like a disaster zone of scattered debris. Investigators continued their work at the hospital, where the driver was issued a criminal citation for operating a vehicle under the influence and negligent operation of a motor vehicle. The lead officer was still working the case at the time of this report, so the driver’s name was not immediately available. Hyannis News will provide official updates as they become available. The initial details in this report are based on radio transmissions and information from police sources. The potential defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
