Naked Homeless Man Seen Defecating Outside Hyannis Medical Offices; Officers Respond with Blankets and Immediate Care [HN Photos]

  HYANNIS, MASSACHUSETTS — Shortly after 8 a.m. Monday, Barnstable Police officers and a Hyannis Fire Department ambulance crew raced to 6 Main Street after reports of a naked man openly defecating on the grounds of a building that houses multiple medical offices in the East End. The first officer on scene found a middle-aged man, known to local responders as one of the area’s homeless residents, completely naked and leaning against one of the buildings as medical workers arrived for the day. The man told the officer he had smoked too much marijuana and asked for a cup of coffee. A second officer, a Barnstable Police patrolwoman who regularly works with the downtown homeless population, retrieved blankets from her cruiser and approached him. Both officers had already built a rapport with the man, who remained relatively cooperative as they helped him cover up. Hyannis Rescue, which had been staging nearby, then moved into the parking lot. Responders calmly but firmly told the man he needed to go to the hospital for a Section 12 mental health evaluation. When he continued requesting coffee and McDonald’s takeout, they assured him his needs would be met at the hospital. He agreed and left with the ambulance crew without incident. Scenes like this have been a recurring part of downtown Hyannis life for decades. First responders routinely navigate the difficult intersection of mental illness, homelessness, and the daily routines of local residents—including school-age children, merchants, and people simply trying to get to work.   ABOVE: A Barnstable Police patrolman assists an Uber driver early this morning after a highly intoxicated female passenger was unable to get out of the vehicle and could not stand on her own. While clearly intoxicated, the officer suspected she might also have additional substances in her system. She denied this, raising concern that she may have been drugged at the bar she had just left—a risk not uncommon on Cape Cod and a reminder for all patrons never to leave drinks unattended. A Hyannis Fire Department ambulance crew arrived and convinced the reluctant woman onto a stretcher. She did not want to go, but her condition left no safe alternative; she was simply too intoxicated to be left alone.
