Car Bursts Into Flames on Route 6 Eastbound; No Crash, Driver Escapes Unharmed [Photo Notes]

              HARWICH, MASSACHUSETTS — A vehicle traveling east on Route 6 suddenly erupted in flames early Friday morning, shutting down the highway for more than an hour despite no crash or injuries. The incident unfolded around 1:20 a.m. when the car, driving normally eastbound, caught fire without warning. The adult male driver escaped safely before the vehicle became fully engulfed. Harwich firefighters arrived to find the car burning intensely. Two engines responded and quickly knocked down the bulk of the blaze, though crews continued working hot spots after one engine ran out of water. A state trooper closed the eastbound lane of Route 6 while firefighters operated. The scene was cleared in just over an hour, with no injuries reported The closure stranded several travelers. An older gentleman who said he was trying to get to Orleans was given directions to turn around, exit the highway, and continue east on Route 6A. A large cargo truck heading to Provincetown was too big to turn around, so it had to wait on the highway’s shoulder until the road reopened. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
