HYANNIS, MASSACHUSETTS — Barnstable Police launched an urgent manhunt Monday evening after a woman reported being attacked by her boyfriend at a residence on Bearses Way, with the suspect — the father of the couple’s 2-year-old son — fleeing on foot after allegedly threatening to harm the child. The incident unfolded early last evening when officers were dispatched to a frantic woman running down Bearses Way. She told police she had just been attacked by her boyfriend. Moments into the call, officers were updated she was now heading toward Barnstable Police Headquarters in a vehicle. Responding officers learned a 2-year-old boy — the suspect’s son — was still inside the home. The child had been asleep during the alleged attack, but neighbors reported possibly seeing the man flee the scene. His vehicle remained in the driveway. With probable cause established for multiple domestic violence charges, police broadcast the suspect’s name, description, and photo to all units. A K-9 team was immediately dispatched. When officers learned the suspect had allegedly threatened the toddler, concern for the child’s safety escalated. The mother, who had reached headquarters and was being treated by Hyannis Fire Department paramedics before her transport to Cape Cod Hospital, gave police permission to enter the residence. Uncertain whether the suspect might still be hiding inside, officers formed a tactical team and made entry. They quickly located the boy and radioed that he was “secured.” A Hyannis ambulance crew, staged nearby, transported the toddler to Cape Cod Hospital for evaluation. He was expected to be reunited with his mother there. A thorough search of the home and yard turned up no sign of the suspect. The manhunt then expanded into surrounding neighborhoods, aided by a Barnstable County Sheriff’s Office drone unit, as well as the BPD K-9 unit. As of late Monday night, the man remained at large. (Note: A separate report of a child choking at another Hyannis residence occurred around the same time as the aforementioned call; the first officers on the 2nd scene confirmed that child was conscious, alert, and safe.) * The above report is mainly based on police radio transmissions and sources on scene. Massachusetts law prohibits the police from officially releasing details on domestic violence cases until after arraignment. Police continue to search for the suspect. The defendant is presumed to be innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
