*** WATCH *** Hyannis Firefighters Swiftly Knock Down Fire at Angel House Women and Children’s Shelter

HYANNIS, MASSACHUSETTS — Hyannis firefighters raced to a working fire at Angel House, a South Street shelter and addiction recovery program for women and their children, and knocked it down within minutes Friday afternoon. Crews were dispatched around noon after an alarm sounded at the facility. Assistant Chief Gregory Dardia said the blaze appeared to have started on the exterior of the building. Thanks to the fire station’s close proximity, firefighters arrived almost immediately and stopped the flames from spreading. All residents and staff evacuated safely, including a pet cat, Dardia reported. No injuries were reported. Barnstable police officers assisted by briefly closing South Street at High School Road to secure hydrant access if needed; the line was never required. A member of the Barnstable County Sheriff’s crime scene unit photographed the scene as the Hyannis Fire Department began its investigation into the fire’s cause. Angel House provides critical housing and support for women in recovery and their young children. The rapid response prevented what could have been a far more serious incident at the vulnerable facility.
