Hyannis, Massachusetts – March 28, 2026 A routine Friday lunchtime in downtown Hyannis turned into a full-scale police operation when reports of vandalism and a “meat cleaver” assault sent Barnstable officers swarming the area and placed the Barnstable Community Innovation School on lockdown. Just after noon on March 27, patrol officers responded to a disturbance on Skating Rink Road. The reporting party — a man well-known to local police — claimed he had been assaulted with a large knife or meat cleaver. He said the suspect had also gone after his dog with the weapon before fleeing into the woods behind the school on Bearses Way. The description was specific: a tall, skinny, light-skinned Black male, about 6’7″, wearing a blue jacket and bright red sweatpants, still carrying the dangerous weapon. Officers wasted no time. A Yarmouth Police K-9 unit swept back yards and pushed into the wooded area near the ball fields. Barnstable units saturated nearby streets. A sheriff’s crime scene unit photographed a smashed van windshield and cleaver-sized gashes in a trailer at the scene. At least one police drone hummed overhead while the elementary school remained locked down for safety. By early afternoon, officers detained a man matching the exact description near the corner of Winter Street and Stevens Street. He was placed against a fence as the alleged victim was driven past in a squad car for a positive identification. Hyannis News photos from the scene show the handcuffed man, a policewoman standing by, and a friend lighting the detainee’s cigarette. The man was transported to Barnstable Police Headquarters for a voluntary interview. What happened next flipped the script. According to police sources, the detained man gave a completely different, contradictory, and seemingly credible version of events. He had an injured hand. No charges were filed. He was released. Despite an extensive search with the K-9 unit, the alleged meat cleaver was never located. The Barnstable Community Innovation School property was cleared and the lockdown lifted once the immediate threat was ruled out. The entire incident remains under active investigation. [DEVELOPING] * Hyannis News Note: All information in the above report is based on radio transmissions and police sources at the time. As always, all persons involved are presumed innocent unless and until charged and proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
