HYANNIS, MASSACHUSETTS – What began as a tragic overdose death on Cape Cod last fall has unraveled a sprawling narcotics network, culminating in a multi-agency raid that netted two more key players in a cocaine trafficking ring—building on an earlier arrest sparked by a bungled car theft that accidentally exposed over a kilo of hidden drugs.
The investigation kicked off in November 2025 after a fatal overdose in Barnstable County. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner determined the cause as diabetic ketoacidosis exacerbated by cocaine intoxication, prompting the State Police Detective Unit assigned to the Cape & Islands District Attorney’s Office to dig deeper. Their probe quickly zeroed in on 56-year-old Andre Silvia of Wareham as the primary supplier of the lethal cocaine. As leads mounted, 62-year-old William Sarnie of Nantucket emerged as a connected figure, linked through parallel inquiries by the Barnstable Police Department.
But the case took a surreal turn in early January 2026, when a would-be car thief’s failed heist inadvertently blew the lid off part of the operation. On January 6, Barnstable Police responded to a call from a man claiming he’d found a suspicious package of white powder along Old Colony Road in Hyannis. Under questioning, the caller admitted the truth: he’d been trying to steal a gray 2024 Kia Forte parked in a commuter lot at Bay Street and Old Colony Road. After prying open the ignition with a screwdriver and failing to start the car, he popped the trunk in search of valuables. Under the spare tire, he uncovered a duct-taped bundle inside a Target bag—1,104 grams of cocaine, worth tens of thousands on the street.

Panicking over the discovery and fearing he’d be pinned for possession, the thief called police himself, posing as a concerned citizen to “get rid of” the drugs. Officers traced the vehicle to its owner: 62-year-old Edward Gillespie of Nantucket (see above booking photo). Surveillance footage later captured Gillespie inspecting the trunk multiple times, pacing anxiously, and making calls—behavior that screamed suspicion. Detectives swooped in, arresting him on the spot after he denied knowledge of the drugs, claiming he was just checking for a missing spare tire. He hadn’t reported any break-in to authorities.
The arrest snowballed. A search warrant for Gillespie’s Nantucket home, executed with help from local police, the U.S. Coast Guard, and the Cape Cod DEA office, turned up an additional 38 grams of cocaine, 68 grams of amphetamines (Adderall), about $10,000 in cash, packaging materials, and a digital scale—classic hallmarks of a trafficking setup. Gillespie was arraigned January 9 on charges of trafficking over 200 grams of cocaine and held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing. He’s due back in Barnstable District Court on March 25 for a probable cause hearing, with Nantucket police pursuing separate charges.
Building on these breakthroughs, authorities ramped up efforts over the ensuing months, deploying enhanced surveillance and securing more warrants. The climax came on March 12, when a coalition of agencies—including the Cape & Islands State Police Detective Unit, Barnstable PD, DEA Cape Cod Taskforce, Wareham PD, Plymouth County State Police, Sandwich PD, Nantucket PD, and Massachusetts State Police Crime Scene Services—raided properties in Wareham and Nantucket simultaneously.
The sweeps led to the arrests of William Sarnie, 62, of Nantucket and Andre Silvia, 56, of Wareham, both held without bail. Sarnie faces conspiracy to violate drug laws, trafficking 200 grams or more of cocaine, and distribution of Class B cocaine; he was arraigned March 13 in Barnstable District Court, with a dangerousness hearing set for March 17. Silvia is charged with trafficking 200 grams or more of cocaine and conspiracy in Barnstable, plus additional trafficking and drug-related counts in Wareham District Court, where he’ll also be arraigned. (Note: Booking photos for Sarnie and Silvia were unavailable at the time of this report.)
Cape & Islands District Attorney Robert J. Galibois and Barnstable Police Chief Jeanne Challies praised the collaborative effort in a joint statement, highlighting the “coordinated efforts, professionalism, and commitment” that safeguarded the community. This bust not only avenges a needless overdose death but also disrupts a pipeline funneling deadly drugs from mainland Massachusetts to the Cape & Islands, proving that even a thief’s mistake can deliver justice. The investigation remains ongoing, with potential for more charges as evidence is processed.
