HYANNIS, MASSACHUSETTS — Chaos erupted at a notoriously unfinished intersection Wednesday evening when a Truro Fire Department ambulance was T-boned by a sedan, forcing a handoff of patient care to keep a “priority 2” transport on track. The collision unfolded shortly after 7:30 p.m. at the intersection of Route 28 and Yarmouth Road in Hyannis, a site plagued by years of ongoing construction that has left it dark, confusing, and hazardous for drivers. According to scene reports, the Truro ambulance was struck broadside while en route to Cape Cod Hospital with a patient in stable but priority-two condition—indicating a serious but currently non-life-threatening medical issue at the time of the crash. In a seamless response, Hyannis Fire Department crews stepped in, transferring the patient to one of their ambulances and completing the short trip to the nearby hospital without further incident. The adult female driver of the sedan was evaluated by Hyannis ambulance personnel right at the crash site and released without needing further treatment. Fortunately, no one in the Truro ambulance sustained injuries. Barnstable Police are now leading an active investigation into the crash’s cause, with assistance from a Barnstable County Sheriff’s crime scene unit, which documented the scene through detailed photographs. Authorities have not yet released details on potential contributing factors, such as visibility issues from the construction zone or whether it was driver error, etc… The ambulance reportedly had its emergency lights activated at the time of the crash. As Hyannis grapples with delayed infrastructure projects, this incident underscores the real-world dangers of prolonged roadwork. Motorists are urged to exercise extreme caution in the many hazardous, unfinished construction projects in the area.
