CHATHAM, MASSACHUSETTS – In a heart-pounding afternoon drama on January 6, 2026, a 4-year-old Golden Retriever named Goose lived up to her name by wandering onto thin ice at Goose Pond, prompting a rapid response from the Chatham Fire Department (CFD). The incident unfolded around 3:20 p.m. when CFD was dispatched by the Barnstable County Sheriff’s Office Regional Emergency Communications Center to the south side of the pond near 150 Goose Pond Road. According to the department’s press release, Goose’s owner had let her out just 15 minutes earlier. He spotted her in trouble—her head and front paws clinging to an ice shelf about 200 feet from shore—and immediately called 911, staying calm and guiding rescuers to the best access point through 250 feet of woods. CFD units, including Car 1, Ambulance 2, and Service 1, arrived swiftly. Car 1 reached the scene at 3:24 p.m., confirming the dog’s precarious position. By 3:30 p.m., three ice rescue technicians in survival suits ventured onto the ice, retrieving Goose in a mere two minutes. She was back on solid ground at 3:32 p.m., with assistance from the Chatham Police Department. Cold and exhausted but showing no signs of severe distress, Goose walked alongside her owner to their home, where she warmed up by the fireplace. The owner was advised to follow up with a veterinarian for a check-up. “This was a successful outcome, but it highlights the dangers of pond ice,” CFD noted in their Facebook post and press release. Even areas with several inches of thickness can give way unexpectedly—no ice is truly safe. Officials praised the owner for resisting the instinct to self-rescue and instead alerting professionals while keeping visual contact on Goose. The rescue serves as a timely winter warning: always prioritize safety and call for help in such emergencies. [CFD photos/ HN edits]
