HYANNIS, MASSACHUSETTS — A terrifying home invasion unfolded on December 3, 2025, when Tyson Colton allegedly entered his ex-girlfriend’s boyfriend’s residence armed with a large knife, possibly a machete, threatening to kill everyone involved—including himself, according to police reports.
The incident began around 4:49 p.m. when Barnstable Police received an alarming call from the boyfriend, reporting that Colton had entered the home and tried to stab him. Multiple squad cars rushed to an address on the west side of Hyannis. Upon arrival, officers approached with weapons drawn, including a patrol rifle and a beanbag shotgun, after learning Colton had threatened both victims.
According to a report by Patrolwoman Kristina Gustafson, the ex-girlfriend was visiting her boyfriend in his bedroom when Colton suddenly opened the door, wielding the knife. He reportedly ranted, “I’m going to kill him, I’m going to kill you, I’m going to kill myself, I’m not leaving here, I’m going to go to jail for life, I’m not leaving here, I’m going to die.” Colton then allegedly held the knife to his own throat before demanding their cellphones, and the disturbance then reportedly escalated into a violent struggle between all involved.
The boyfriend reportedly managed to briefly restrain Colton’s arms, but Colton was allegedly able to strike his ex-girlfriend in the jaw during the fight. Colton then allegedly strangled her, pressing down on her neck and cutting off her breathing. The boyfriend armed himself with a glass bong to fend off Colton, which allowed him to escape to a neighbor’s house, where the neighbor called police. The girlfriend had also managed to escape to the neighbor’s house.
The ex-girlfriend had recently extended a restraining order against Colton, which had been served to him in person, according to Officer Gustafson’s report. After fleeing from the home, the victims were safe, but Colton was believed to still be inside the home. A protective sweep by officers eventually confirmed he had escaped.
An ambulance evaluated the ex-girlfriend’s injured jaw, but she declined transport to Cape Cod Hospital.
Police reportedly tracked the stolen cellphone to an address in South Dennis, where Barnstable and Yarmouth officers saturated the area looking for Colton. A Barnstable Police detective eventually spotted Colton backing a black F-150 pickup truck out of a nearby conservation area and conducted a high-risk stop, arresting him without further incident. The ex-girlfriend’s phone was recovered from the truck’s cup holder, according to police reports.
Colton was booked at Barnstable Police Department headquarters on a litany of charges including Armed Home Invasion (large knife), Violation of an Abuse Prevention Order, two counts of Assault with a Dangerous Weapon (large knife), domestic Assault and Battery (for striking his ex in the jaw), Strangulation, Intimidation of a Witness, Larceny (cellphone), and two counts of Threat to Commit a Crime (Murder).
Later that evening, around 10:30 p.m., the ex-girlfriend reportedly discovered an AirTag affixed to her vehicle’s exhaust, believed to have helped Colton locate her. The device was photographed and secured as evidence.
According to a supplemental police report filed by Patrolman Christopher Lobianco, Tyson Colton told him a different version of alleged events. The following image contains an actual excerpt from Officer Lobianco’s report:
