[ABOVE: Abington PD booking photo of Jhonatan Rodrigues/ HN edits] ABINGTON, MASSACHUSETTS – In a swift display of police work, Abington officers arrested a 26-year-old Hyannis man following a violent, targeted assault on Bedford Street over the weekend, according to an APD media statement. The incident reportedly unfolded when the overnight shift responded to reports of a victim being attacked and beaten with a handgun. Despite an exhaustive search, the suspect evaded immediate capture. However, the team gathered crucial intelligence that paved the way for a breakthrough. Over the next three days, the detective division collaborated tirelessly with law enforcement partners on Cape Cod and the State Police. Yesterday afternoon, Detective Sergeant Lynch apprehended Jhonatan Rodrigues in Brockton. Rodrigues was set to be arraigned Thursday on charges including Assault and Battery with a Dangerous Weapon (Ch 265 S 15A), Threat to Commit a Crime, To Wit Murder (Ch 275 S 2), Carrying a Firearm Without a License (Ch 269 S 10(a)), and Disorderly Conduct (Ch 272 S 53). The Abington Police Department reaffirmed its commitment to community safety in the wake of the arrest. Chief John Bonney praised the effort on social media, highlighting the dedication of his understaffed team. “I am so impressed with this entire investigation,” Bonney wrote. “Our overnight shift consists of just 2 patrol officers and a sergeant. During this early morning call we did have some of our newest officers working as well, but they are just weeks out of the academy and must be side by side with their field trainers. They hear a call of a person attacked and injured. They care for his wounds and keep him safe and then begin a search for armed gunman. Then days later, our detective unit of 1 (yes 1) takes this person into custody. No one told me they weren’t up to it. No one said we don’t have enough people to help. They all just did the job without a thought.” Bonney noted the department is nearing full staffing for the first time in decades but faces a massive budget shortfall. “I worry for our team’s safety every single day. I cannot imagine having to lose any of them for budgetary reasons,” he added. “Collectively, we are building something special here. Deputy Chief Postell and I are so proud of our group and are in awe of the way they say ‘send me’ on any call that comes in. We are going to need your support next May. Thank you all for your encouragement. It is such a privilege to serve this community.” * Reminder: The details contained in the above HN report are based on a Abington Police Department media statement. The defendant is presumed to be innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
