BARNSTABLE, MASSACHUSETTS – At around 4:00 a.m. Saturday morning – October 18, 2025 – Barnstable Police patrol officers and Hyannis Firefighters rushed to the apartments at 174 Main Street for a report that someone had been shot. HN arrived moments after police began working the scene. (See second HN Video below…) Officers found a 28-year-old Hyannis woman down with a gunshot wound to her chest. (Police have not yet officially identified the victim…) Officers also learned that multiple shots had been heard by witnesses prior to their arrival, and that the suspects were allegedly still inside one of the apartments, believed to still be armed. Armed with drawn sidearms, patrol rifles, and a ballistic shield, officers immediately set up security around the patient, carrying her out of harm’s way to an awaiting Hyannis FD ambulance crew. [Note: Hyannis Firefighters had also teamed up with police to carry the patient out of harm’s way.] The female was rushed to Cape Cod Hospital where she was reported to be in critical condition. She was eventually taken to the airport and airlifted from Hyannis to an off-Cape trauma center. As of October 18, 2025 (the last word on the patient’s condition), the female gunshot victim was recovering in a Boston area hospital and was expected to survive, thanks to the immediate efforts of first responders.
Officers then worked on setting up a secure perimeter around the apartment complex, in order to set the stage for SWAT resources already en route. Hours into a standoff, SWAT convinced two males to exit the building with their hands in the air. Both males were taken into custody and transporting to Barnstable PD Headquarters.
18-year-old Evan Araujo of Hyannis and 19-year-old Jacob Winbush of Hyannis were arrested for the shooting of the 28-year-old Hyannis woman, according to an October 18, 2025, Barnstable PD media statement.
Both were charged with the following:
– Assault to Murder, Armed with a Firearm
– Assault and Battery with a Firearm
– Discharging a Firearm Within 500′ of a Dwelling
– Possession of Ammunition without an FID Card
As you will see and hear in the following HN Video, not guilty pleas were entered for both suspects at their arraignment Monday, October 20, 2025. Jacob Winbush was held pending a dangerousness hearing scheduled for Monday, October 27, 2025, in Barnstable District Court.
The audio was extremely difficult to pick up inside the courtroom, but the following video appears to show defense attorney Flannery Rogers arguing on behalf of Evan Araujo after the Commonwealth’s motion to revoke his bail. The Commonwealth’s motion mentioned a recent Assault with a Dangerous Weapon charge from when Araujo was still a 17-year-old juvenile. (At the time of his arrest Saturday, Araujo, now 18 years old, was still wearing a GPS ankle monitor from his most recent juvenile case…) According to the Commonwealth, Araujo had been exiting a local high school football game when he allegedly pulled a firearm and pistol whipped another juvenile in the parking lot. Attorney Rogers focused more on the current Assault with Intent to Murder Charges from this past weekend, arguing there was not probable cause that Araujo had been involved, pointing out that unidentified witnesses cannot establish probable cause… and that there was not enough to tie her client to the two rounds of ammunition and two firearms found after police executed a search warrant at an apartment… and that the firearms and ammo could have come from one of the unnamed witnesses on scene. And regarding Araujo’s recent juvenile charges, Attorney Rogers pointed out her client was/is very young and that an adolescent’s brain development makes it difficult to think ahead. Judge John Julian listened to both sides and mentioned he would make a decision on whether to revoke Araujo’s bail later in the day. (HN was unable to be in attendance for Judge Julian’s ruling and will update this report with his decision as soon as it becomes available…)
HN reminder: All defendants are presumed to be innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
