HYANNIS, MASSACHUSETTS – [HN photo notes] – A late-night robbery at the JFK Museum on Main Street left a young man shaken but relieved after Barnstable Police swiftly apprehended the suspect and recovered his stolen electric bicycle. The incident unfolded shortly after 11:00 p.m. when the victim called 911, reporting that a man dressed in all black with gray shoes threatened him with a knife and fled with his custom-built red e-bike toward Barnstable Road.
Thanks to a keen-eyed Barnstable Police patrolman, the suspect was spotted minutes later riding the stolen e-bike near North Street and Sea Street. A BPD sergeant provided backup, and the suspect was detained without resistance. The victim was transported to the scene and positively identified the detainee as the robber. Although no knife was found during a frisk, further discussion with the victim revealed the suspect had allegedly implied a weapon by keeping his hand in his pocket during the confrontation.
The suspect, identified as Thomas Clayton, a 32-year-old homeless man from Hyannis, was charged with unarmed robbery. A sheriff’s crime scene unit assisted with photographic evidence at the scene. The victim, reunited with his e-bike (which may have had some things jarred out of whack during the robbery), made minor adjustments to its electronics and handlebars before continuing his late-night commute.
Barnstable Police’s rapid response ensured the suspect was apprehended and the victim’s property was returned, bringing a swift resolution to a tense encounter in Hyannis’ downtown tourist district.
HN reminder: All defendants are presumed to be innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

ABOVE HN PHOTOS: Barnstable Police patrol officers scrambled to check on the wellbeing of a motorist driving without one of their tires in the dimly lit Hyannis Port area last evening. A Good Samaritan had phoned police reporting sparks flying while the vehicle grinded along on its rims. Officers quickly caught up and conducted a traffic stop on Craigville Beach Road. It turned out to be a sweet, white-haired elderly woman who appeared disoriented. Concerned her confusion may have been brought on by some type of medical emergency, officers immediately called an ambulance. Hyannis Rescue arrived and transported the woman to Cape Cod Hospital. It appears a caretaker was notified regarding the alarming incident… and the woman’s vehicle ended up being towed.

Officers responded to the obscure West Barnstable address after receiving a report of a violent family disturbance that ended up sending two individuals to Cape Cod Hospital. One of the patients suffered head lacerations from broken glass. A number of police officers quickly arrived and brought the situation under control. Sources say there will be criminal charges. The following HN photo shows officers following one of the two ambulances on its way to CCH.
