YARMOUTH PORT, MASSACHUSETTS –  The beginning of a 47th birthday celebration took a destructive turn early this morning when Shane Kotel of Dennis crashed his pickup truck into a utility pole on Route 6A near King’s Circuit, sparking chaos and leading to charges of Operating Under the Influence (OUI-Liquor), Operating to Endanger, and a Marked Lanes violation. The alarming scene brought a swift response from police and firefighters shortly after 2:00 a.m., as can be viewed and heard in the following HN Video. First responders arrived to find Kotel up and walking, bloodied with facial lacerations. The 47-year-old was transported to Cape Cod Hospital for evaluation of injuries not believed to be life-threatening. His pickup truck, however, was heavily damaged and entangled in live wires. The impact was so severe that the utility pole, bearing high-tension wires, was snapped in two places, with suspected damage to underground wiring as well. The crash forced the complete closure of Route 6A, a vital artery in Yarmouth Port. An Eversource crew assessed the damage, estimating repairs would take at least 12 hours. With the pole destroyed and wiring compromised, repairs may be complicated, and significant traffic delays are expected during the morning rush. The following HN Video highlights the severity of the crash. * REMINDER: All defendants are presumed to be innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
