On this Day - Aug 18th (2006)

Cape Escape 2006     I was taking a trip back through time and stopped in 2006, August 18th, twenty years ago. We were at the Cape and the weather was perfect. It was impossible for me not to take a photo of the Nauset Light in Eastham. It is such an iconic symbol for Cape Cod which shows up on every bag of Cape Cod potato chips.   The “On This Day” Project   I’ve been using Digital Cameras for over 20 years. Besides the savings on film and developing is the automatic storage of metadata. The time the photos was taken, exposure, aperture and even location is automatically saved along with the pixels. Because of this detailed information, I can determine which photos were taken on the current day from previous years.   I’ve learned that I’m fairly consistent with my subject choices. I have lots of photos of the first crocus in Springtime, first snow of the season, birthday photos. I also see how people have aged and how many are no longer with us.   Reviewing photos also gives me the opportunity to cull the rejects. One downside of digital camera is the ability to take burst shots. Something one might do when photographing a bird in flight. It is easy to capture a hundred identical (and boring photos). So this project serves two purposes, nostalgia and clutter removal.   This lighthouse photo was taken with a Pentax Optio W10 waterproof camera. I wanted a waterproof camera for the beach and it was just the thing. It was waterproof until it wasn’t.
