SOUTH YARMOUTH, Mass. — A West Yarmouth man was arrested Thursday after his pickup truck careened erratically through local streets, nearly colliding with other vehicles and pedestrians before slamming into a utility pole, according to a Yarmouth PD statement. Yarmouth Police received multiple 911 calls Thursday afternoon reporting a pickup truck weaving through the area of Old Main Street and South Street. Callers said the vehicle could not stay in its lane and came close to striking oncoming cars head-on. The truck continued its dangerous path along South Shore Drive, passing busy beach parking lots and pedestrians on the sidewalks. Moments later, the truck struck a utility pole on Pine Grove Road, causing heavy front-end damage and cracking the pole so that it leaned precariously. When officers arrived, a bystander was already trying to restrain the driver, who had allegedly attempted to leave the scene on foot. Police detained the man and noted clear signs of intoxication. Further investigation led to the arrest of Michael Volpe, 47, of West Yarmouth. He was charged with operating under the influence of intoxicating liquor, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, and a marked lanes violation. Volpe was arraigned Friday at Barnstable District Court. Yarmouth Police emphasized their ongoing commitment to roadway safety, stating they will continue aggressive enforcement against impaired drivers and hold offenders accountable. HN Reminder: The details contained in the above report are based on a Yarmouth PD media statement. The defendant is presumed to be innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
