Hyannis Overnight Photos: “Women Fighting in the Bushes”

          ABOVE: Moments after last call, several Barnstable Police squad cars rushed toward a “wicked” popular downtown Hyannis watering hole on a report of a group of women fighting in the bushes next to the establishment. Upon arrival, officers encountered a woman visiting from Brooklyn, New York, yelling at another woman who was crying and bleeding slightly from one of her eyebrow piercings. When asked, she told officers she did not need an ambulance. It was uncertain who the actual combatants were, as a number of bar patrons were already leaving the area. Officers tried to learn what had just happened, but all of the women were speaking at the same time. In one of the above photos, a patrolman in a late-arriving squad car asked one of the officers on scene what had occurred; the officer on the sidewalk could only shrug. In the end, with emotions slightly more settled and the brawl in the bushes not having occurred in their presence, all the officers could do was ensure everyone was okay and wish them a safe journey home. Peace had been restored, and it was on to the next call for our long-suffering police officers… (No arrests were made.)           ABOVE: “Lost in Translation…” When the investigating officer asked the translator to have the driver stand with his hands at his sides, the driver bent over and began touching his toes. A short time after the bars closed, a Barnstable patrolman working the west side of Hyannis attempted to stop a vehicle traveling north on Pitchers Way. The vehicle was slow to pull over, forcing the officer to activate his siren. It eventually stopped near the intersection with Mitchell’s Way. The driver spoke little English, so the patrolman used a cellphone Portuguese translation service to conduct field sobriety tests after suspecting him of operating under the influence. The driver appeared unsteady on his feet, and officers had to halt one of the exercises so he would not fall and risk injury. Anderson Luan Godinho Barreiros, 36, currently residing in Hyannis, was arrested and charged with operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol. The defendant is presumed to be innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.   ABOVE: ‘I’M GOING TO KILL SOMEONE!’ At around 2:20 a.m. this morning, a plainclothes Barnstable Police patrolman was flagged down by a woman on Main Street in Hyannis about a man screaming that he was going to kill someone. The officer made contact with the alleged homicidal screamer in front of the JFK Museum. The man, who is currently homeless in Hyannis, was taken into protective custody and brought back to police headquarters to sleep it off…   ABOVE: Sergeant Stops Vehicle with a “Kid” on Top At around 2:15 a.m. Friday morning, July 25, 2026, a Barnstable Police sergeant was monitoring Route 28 traffic in Hyannis when he noticed a Ford Explorer traveling westbound with a juvenile male on its roof. He quickly stopped the SUV and ordered the teen down. All four occupants were minors, including the 17-year-old driver. The driver claimed he was unaware his rear passenger had climbed out onto the vehicle’s roof… at least that was his story, and he stuck to it. The sergeant gave all of the occupants — especially the rear roof climber — a stern talking-to, telling them to make smarter, safer decisions. After a good lecture, the juveniles were sent on their way with a warning.
