“Somewhere Quiet” (2023)

After being held captive for six months by kidnappers, a woman seeks solace with her husband in his family’s secluded Cape Cod home, where she begins to suspect that he and his overbearing cousin are not her allies. Her vivid hallucinations make her a resoundingly unreliable narrator, peppering this mystery with red herrings that mirror the unraveling of her mind and the unanswered questions surrounding her disappearance almost to the end. Unfortunately for audiences, a fateful choice by her husband in the final minutes undermines some of that intentional ambiguity, working against the premise. Like “Keeper,” the strength of this slow-boil psychological thriller rests largely on an engaging female lead (Jennifer Kim) — her dread, her resourcefulness, her peril and trauma — on top of Marin Ireland’s nervy portrayal as her primary foil. Kim plays a Korean adoptee with some ambivalence about the old money family she’s married into, but a mild subtext about race, money and privilege isn’t dwelled upon, making “Somewhere Quiet” mostly a worthy slow-build boiler about trust, paranoia and PTSD.
