HYANNIS, MASSACHUSETTS — ABOVE HN PHOTOS — Barnstable Police were dispatched after receiving a traffic complaint regarding a BMW X2 driving on North Street without headlights, running red lights, and passing other vehicles early last evening — May 28, 2026. A patrolman quickly caught up to and attempted to stop the BMW on North Street near High School Road. The BMW reportedly did not pull over right away, according to radio transmissions. The patrolman radioed the situation and activated his sirens. The vehicle eventually stopped in front of the entrance to McDonald’s. Additional cruisers arrived to assist. The driver reportedly requested an ambulance for a possible medical issue. A Hyannis Fire Department ambulance crew responded. A computer check revealed that the registered owner of the BMW was a 34-year-old male currently residing in Hyannis. He had a suspended driver’s license and past charges of operating under the influence and negligent operation of a motor vehicle on his adult record. After being given the option of being checked out at the hospital or being taken into custody, the driver decided to be transported to Cape Cod Hospital by Hyannis Rescue. A Barnstable Police patrol officer also responded to the hospital. According to sources, the driver is expected to be summoned to court on criminal motor vehicle charges, including negligent operation of a motor vehicle and other charges. The incident was still under investigation at the time of this report. The BMW X2 was towed from the scene by Buckler’s Towing.     ABOVE HN PHOTOS — At around 3 a.m. this morning — May 29, 2026 — a Barnstable Police sergeant observed a silver sedan on Old Craigville Beach Road traveling about 50 to 60 mph, according to radio transmissions. When the sergeant got behind the vehicle, the driver reportedly shut off the vehicle’s lights in an attempt to evade the officer. The sergeant lost sight of the vehicle in the area of Strawberry Hill Road. Another Barnstable Police patrol officer had also been in the area watching the same silver sedan before it reportedly took evasive action and disappeared. Additional Barnstable Police Department (BPD) units, including a state trooper, began saturating the area on the lookout for the silver sedan. Minutes later, the sergeant located a suspicious silver sedan parked at the Craigville Beach Association with its lights off. It turned out to be the same silver sedan that had taken off from officers just moments earlier. Additional officers arrived to assist. A computer check revealed the driver was a 21-year-old male currently listed as residing in West Yarmouth. He was detained in handcuffs. Officers spoke with the young man at length. The young man’s father eventually responded to the scene. The young man appeared to realize he had made a mistake. He was eventually released into the custody of his father and will receive a summons for criminal motor vehicle charges, including negligent operation of a motor vehicle. According to sources, the sergeant will also be submitting an “Immediate Threat License Suspension/Revocation Request” form to the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles.
