In the aftermath of the devastating Blizzard of 2026, which delivered a mix of heavy snow and high winds, with accumulations generally ranging up to 21 inches across Barnstable County, Cape Cod remains the epicenter of lingering power outages. As of late February 26, approximately 35,335 customers in Barnstable County—encompassing the bulk of Cape Cod—are still without electricity, down significantly from over 138,000 statewide just a day earlier, according to poweroutage.us. This represents about 19% of the county’s tracked customers, with Eversource bearing the brunt of the disruptions as the primary utility provider in the region. (Note: The number of outages is expected to drop significantly throughout the evening…)
The storm’s fierce combination of heavy snow and wind gusts toppled trees, snapped power lines, and caused widespread grid damage. Eversource crews, bolstered by reinforcements from states including Michigan and Ohio, have been working tirelessly around the clock to restore service.
Full recovery will take time. Eversource estimates “substantially complete” restoration—meaning 99% of customers back online—for most Cape towns by Friday, February 27, though timelines vary: Eastham could see power return by 6 p.m. Friday, while harder-hit areas like Barnstable, Brewster, Dennis, Harwich, Wellfleet, and Yarmouth may wait until 11:59 p.m. Friday.
