HYANNIS, MASSACHUSETTS – In a twist that surprises absolutely no one familiar with the area, yet another two-vehicle collision rocked the notorious South Street and High School Road intersection last evening, sending two people to the hospital and narrowly averting a vehicular home breach courtesy of a hefty snowbank. The crash unfolded around 9:25 p.m., drawing a swift response from Barnstable Police and Hyannis Firefighters, who temporarily shut down traffic to manage the chaos. As captured in Hyannis News footage from the scene, the wreckage could have been far worse: one vehicle slammed into a door overhang after its force had been dampened by a deep snowbank, sparing the front wall of a nearby home at 323 South Street from catastrophic damage. Two individuals were rushed to Cape Cod Hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening. Sources indicate one driver is facing at least a stop sign violation citation. On-site, firefighters deployed speedy dry to soak up leaking vehicle fluids, while Ziggy’s tow truck operators had their hands full rounding up scattered debris. The Barnstable Police Department is leading the ongoing investigation, which extended to the emergency room after the scene was secured. This latest incident underscores a grim pattern at South Street and High School Road, where serious—and often life-threatening—crashes are alarmingly common. Local residents are left scratching their heads, wondering when officials will finally step up to enhance safety measures along the notorious South Street drag strip that runs through a school zone. For now, the owner of 323 South Street can thank a plowed snowbank for dodging disaster! (And it’s uncertain whether the public works snowplow operator responsible for creating the big, beautiful snowbank will receive any recognition at the next town meeting—but they should, for at least they’re out there doing something, albeit inadvertently, to make that horror show of an intersection safer!)
