COTUIT, MASSACHUSETTS – [HN photo notes] – A dramatic single-vehicle rollover crash shook the quiet village of Cotuit late Wednesday night, October 22, 2025, stopping just steps from a historic landmark. At approximately 10:50 p.m., Barnstable Police and Cotuit Firefighters rushed to 93 Main Street following reports of a vehicle on its side with possible entrapment.
The adult male driver, whose identity has not been released, remained at the scene and was transported to Cape Cod Hospital by a Cotuit FD ambulance crew. Authorities confirmed his injuries were not life-threatening. The heavily damaged Toyota Highlander, which struck a curb, spiraled into a large tree, and then collided with a second tree before coming to rest on its side, narrowly missed the historic Santuit Post Office.
Built circa 1846, the 1.5-story wood-frame, cottage-style building served the Santuit Village community – now part of Cotuit – until the 1970s. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1987, the old Post Office stands as a testament to the area’s rich history. Property owners expressed relief that the crash spared the iconic structure, which was mere footsteps from the wreckage.
According to preliminary investigations, the Toyota Highlander was traveling north on Main Street when it veered out of control. The impact forced the complete closure of Main Street as responders worked to clear the scene, while ensuring public safety. A Barnstable Police Department patrolman followed the ambulance to Cape Cod Hospital, where the investigation continued.
At the time of this report, the driver is expected to face criminal charges, including Negligent Operation of a Motor Vehicle and Marked Lanes violations.
