BARNSTABLE, MASSACHUSETTS – [HN photo notes] – A devastating e-bike crash left a young man (approximately in his mid-20s) with severe injuries early this morning at the intersection of Independence Drive and Mary Dunn Road. Shortly after 3:00 a.m., Barnstable Police responded to reports of a man crying for help, alerted by a woman in an apartment roughly 100 yards away.
Upon arrival, officers found the man with horrific leg injuries, including at least one, possibly two, compound fractures with visible bone, according to sources. The victim had been riding an electric bike along Independence Drive at high speed when he collided head-on with a guardrail and was thrown onto an asphalt path under construction next to Mary Dunn Road. He reportedly told responders that his brakes had failed, causing him to be thrown from the bike. Witnesses noted he had been seen earlier traveling the wrong way at high speed down a one-way entrance to the airport rotary in Hyannis. Fortunately, he was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
Barnstable Fire Department ambulance crews arrived swiftly, carefully stabilizing the man’s leg with an inflatable brace before lifting him over the guardrail and into an ambulance. Initially, medics considered requesting a MedFlight helicopter but opted to transport him to Cape Cod Hospital first. Later this morning, a patient was airlifted via MedFlight from the airport in Hyannis, though it remains unclear if it was this particular crash victim.
The young man was in significant pain, and responders worked diligently to manage his condition. No further details were available at the time of this report.
