The Steamship Authority freight ferry Woods Hole will be headed to Fairhaven for repair over a bad bearing. Sean Driscoll, Steamship Authority communications director, said a “bad bearing associated with the steering motor for [the] bow thruster” of the Woods Hole needs to be replaced. Driscoll said it’s “unknown” why the bearing went bad. The boat is scheduled to be moved to the Steamship repair facility in Fairhaven. According to VesselFinder, the site utilized by the Steamship Authority…

Jim Malkin, the Vineyard’s representative on the Steamship Authority board, is no longer aiming to represent the Island for a third term. The Dukes County Commissioners announced Malkin’s withdrawal from Steamship board candidacy on Monday afternoon. County officials have decided to extend the deadline for Steamship board member applications to Friday, Jan. 9. “We sincerely thank him for his years of dedicated service,” the release said of Malkin. Malkin was first appointed to the…
This is a developing story. The U.S. Department of the Interior announced on Monday a pause on leases for all large-scale offshore wind projects under construction. The order affects at least two projects off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard that were near completion — Vineyard Wind 1 and Revolution Wind. The pause, effective immediately, is attributed to national security concerns identified in classified reports by the Department of War (previously the Department of Defense). A press release…
A popular Asian restaurant on Main Street in Vineyard Haven was temporarily closed for unsafe food handling practices last week, but was cleared to open again on Friday. The Tisbury Board of Health penalized Mikado Asian Bistro and cited several public health concerns, including that fish, soup, and rice were left out overnight to be served the following day. Drew Belsky, the Tisbury health agent, said he conducted two recent inspections at Mikado. During the first one, last Friday, he found unsafe…

To call anyone in Chilmark is to roll the dice on whether the cell phone connection will be strong enough for a conversation to hold. Very often calls cut off mid-conversation once you enter North Road or certain patches of Middle Road, and often you need to move to another location before a connection returns. Frequent dropped calls and dead zones are an annoyance to many who live up-Island. But this unreliability is not just a gamble with one’s time or simply an unlucky draw for callers who…
To the Editor: It was the Saturday after Thanksgiving around dinnertime, and I was snuggled up on the couch by the fire with my dog Nama snoozing beside me, when I heard a strange noise in our fireplace, followed by a knock on the door with a man yelling, “There’s fire coming out of your chimney!” Our family ran outside to see huge orange flames exploding from our chimney, swirling against the black night sky. After dialing 911, the lovely soul on the end of the line was calm and responsive:…
The Aquinnah Select Board has appointed Christopher P. Manning Thursday as a full-time officer to ease the severe staffing shortage that has left the Island’s smallest town relying on costly help from the Dukes County Sheriff’s Office. Aquinnah Chief of Police Randhi Belain also said that Chilmark will not be assisting the short-staffed police force of their neighboring town. Manning is a town resident and the most recent appointee to Aquinnah’s select board. He currently serves as a full-time…
