One good rainy day last week, but overall it has been lovely. Still sunny days, clear nights, fairly mild, or at least temperate. 40 to 60° is what I consider temperate. Nice days for clipping greens for decorations. Nice days for working outside. Nice days for holiday shopping. The two Christmas cactuses that I inherited from my mother are covered with magenta-colored flowers. I think Christmas cactus might be a misnomer, as they actually begin to bloom around Thanksgiving, and often continue through…
Heard on Main Street: Why does everyone just assume you have a computer, and want to use it for everything imaginable? After trying to find some tiny missing pieces, I expect to receive something soon that I did not even know would be available. I have a small ceramic Christmas tree, after many years now missing several of the little color pieces you fit into its holes to glow like Christmas lights on the tree. The bits fell out, or somehow escaped into the wild blue yonder, and were permanently…
“Our hearts grow tender with childhood memories and love of kindred, and we are better throughout the year for having, in spirit, become a child again at Christmastime.” —Laura Ingalls Wilder Donaroma’s did a great job of making us all feel like children again with its annual Christmas greenhouse display. The theme was “T’was the Night Before Christmas,” and the staff became the characters of the story, dressed in pajamas and offering visions of sugarplums. This looks amazing:…
The days leading up to the solstice are intense for me. I treasure time with friends. My heart is bare, easily touched by the tension between ever-present challenges and horrors and the miraculous. For as long as I can remember, I have held others in the light. By this time of year, I sometimes forget to do the same for myself. “Don’t be discouraged by your incapacity to dispel darkness from the world. Light your candle and step forward.” Amma, known by some as the hugging saint, encourages…
Gabbi Camilleri is back home, safe and mending. She wants you to know that all the love that was sent her way surely helped her get through what turned out not to be a stroke at all. Her symptoms were caused by a mass in her brain, and once the mass was removed, the task ahead became simply one of rehabilitation. Somebody as tough and positive as Gabbi can certainly handle that, I’m sure. Keep on cheering for her, though; we’ve already proven that it helps. Every year Pam Glavin puts up a Wishing…

Tisbury town meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 17 and a big item on the agenda will be asking voters to borrow $4.4 million for maintenance and upgrades at the Vineyard Haven Library. Advocates have been raising money for an addition that would help create gathering space at the Main Street library, but the building is also in need of maintenance. The $4.4 million request at town meeting is part of a larger package of over $8 million total. The town treasurer Jon Snyder says that the borrowing…
