Egypt might have some days of violence ahead if Pres. Mubarak doesn't step down soon. Today, saying his main responsibility is to restore order to Egypt, he appeared on national television. He also said he will not run for president the next time there is an election. No one knows when that will happen. It is widely accepted that he stole the last election. Now he says he is calling on the legislature to come up with a date for an election. At times sounding aggressive and angry, Mubarak said that he was unhappy with the damage that has been done to the National Museum. He also hinted that his Army might become more active in holding down the demonstration.
It is difficult to see how Mubarak's appearance today can do anything but inflame the demonstrators. Several days ago when Mubarak ordered the Internet shut off, the demonstration seemed to widen. He spent a good part of his television appearance today stating his accomplishments as a soldier, and did not appear to be aware of the real situation in his country. Most commentators watching the event say they do not believe Mubarak will be allowed to stay in Egypt much longer. Some believe the Egyptian Army might insist that he leave the nation to avoid more violence. Many believe his defiance will escalate tensions on the ground.
