MARSTONS MILLS, MASSACHUSETTS – [HN PHOTO NOTES] – In the early morning hours of Saturday, August 9, 2025, a quiet neighborhood on Mistic Drive was rattled by an alarming incident. At approximately 12:20 a.m., Barnstable Police descended on the area following a distressing 911 call from a resident reporting an attempted break-in. The caller described a damaged front door, with splintered wood and mysterious footprints left on the stoop, hinting at the intruder’s forceful attempt to enter. Inside the home, a senior couple, shaken by a sudden loud bang, confronted the unsettling reality of their violated sanctuary… and were left to grapple with fear and uncertainty about the unknown assailant’s intentions. Both seniors had no idea what the assailant(s) looked like.
Barnstable Police swiftly zeroed in on two local juveniles, ages 12 and 13, spotted riding bicycles nearby. Though both denied involvement in the attempted break-in, officers noted their proximity and remained skeptical. Visible footprints trailing through the grass from the couple’s home prompted a call for reinforcements, including a K9 unit, additional patrol cars, and a drone to scan for heat signatures in the surrounding streets, including a cemetery and a nearby town way to water.
A Barnstable County Sheriff’s Crime Scene Unit arrived to dust for fingerprints, photograph the scene, and collect evidence. Meanwhile, K9 Officer Dan Ruth and his patrol dog, Romko, hit the ground running, flanked by two officers ready to confront any suspect. After more than an hour of relentless tracking, Romko led the team to a garage door on a nearby street, where officers spotted a bicycle matching the description of one ridden by a juvenile encountered earlier, raising strong suspicions of a potential connection.
Officers promptly contacted the juvenile’s father, who was unaware his son had slipped out of the house earlier that night. Sources indicate the boy later admitted his involvement in the incident. The Barnstable Police investigation remains active, with potential charges under consideration. Further details were not available at the time of this report.
