Chatham Lighthouse was built in 1808. It was the second light station on Cape Cod. (Highland Lighthouse, built in 1797, was the first.)   In 1808, when the towers were originally constructed, they were built of wood. Over the years these towers would be replaced twice—in 1841 and 1877. The 1877 towers were made of cast iron and meant to last.   Prior to 1923, it was known as Twin Lights because the original structure consisted of two towers. (The site now consists of only one tower, but the second tower has been relocated and is now known as Nauset Lighthouse in Eastham, MA.)   Today, Chatham Lighthouse is an active light as well as an active Coast Guard station. The former keeper’s house is on-duty personnel living quarters. It’s closed to the public, and the property is fenced off, but you can still get a good view of it from the sidewalk and the beach across the street. However, for those who wish to walk the grounds and climb the lighthouse to the light room, there’s a handful of dates each year where they open the property and lighthouse to the public.             To see more photos of Chatham and Chatham Lighthouse, please visit my website here.To see more photos, please visit my website here.
