Although they can not confirm or deny that they are investigating the hiring of Jeff Perry as a Special Sheriff, the State Ethics Commission is the body who investigates patronage, which some in the media and the political community have charged is the case with Sheriff James Cummings choice of Perry for a $110,000 a year job.
In an off-the-record interview today a state official explained that when a friend hires a friend, as is the case with Cummings and Perry, paperwork must be filed and sent to the ethics commission before the hire can take place. Further he said the person hired has to meet all the standards as required for the job or a "conflict of interest" might be present.
He said the first step is for the person doing the hiring to "disclose to the committee" that he is a personal friend of the person he is hiring." This step is required by law. He said "a friendship by itself wouldn't disqualify an individual" but it would "certainly recquire a much closer look than if he had hired somone with whom he was not a friend." He refused through the entire interview to confirm or deny whether Cummings hiring of Perry was being investigated.
Further, he said the State Ethics Commission welcomes all letters and phone conversations with citizens in situations such as this.
TD Bank is America's most convenient bank, but to local bank robbers, it seems to be the most convenient bank to rob. The Centerville TD Bank branch was robbed today making it the fifth TD Bank branch to be robbed on Cape Cod over the last couple months.
Massachusetts DMF biologists say one of the great white sharks tagged with electronic tracking equipment last summer off Cape Cod has traveled as far as north Florida (50 miles off Jacksonville). Officials said Wednesday that the tag popped off the shark on Friday and began transmitting data by satellite.
The story about the rare hummingbird found frozen in the snow in Harwich has been generating a little buzz. I saw the story come through the News Wire from a number of sources. The Cape Cod Times ran a couple stories and shot a CapeCast video about it (see below). Apparently the Allen's hummingbird is very rare around these parts.
Siobhan Magnus loves scary movies, is a "babysitter extraordinare," and is a glassblowing apprentice. If all goes well for the Barnstable High graduate, she could also be the next American Idol. Siobhan is the singer in a band called Lunar Valve (see video). We'll see if she turns out to be the quirky contestant the producers let into the top 24 or if she's merely Hollywood fodder.

I have been a fan of Tim Caldwell's Cape Wide News since it was just a Comcast page (before the Cape Cod Daily was born). Cape Wide News is hands down the best coverage of local Public Safety, Police and Fire news.
Denis Taylor was arrested shortly after 8 a.m. Wednesday, according to the Yarmouth police and prosecutors. A warrant was served at 2 Ivanhoe Road after anonymous tips indicated that Taylor was responsible for the two recent bank heists in Yarmouth. He is currently being held on $100,000 cash bail for felony armed robbery of the Rockland Trust Bank on Station Avenue and felony unarmed robbery of the TD Bank on Route 28 in South Yarmouth. According to reports Taylor has a previous bank robbery conviction.
Robbery and other serious crimes have been dotting the Cape Cod headlines lately and recently Dennisport has been a hotbed of serious criminal activity. With several armed robberies and a pistol whipping all occuring in D'port during the last week, the village in Dennis is giving Hyannis a run for it's money.
