HYANNIS, MA- Nantucket Shuttle Plane Lands on Belly- Barnstable Municipal Airport (07-26-10)
A Nantucket Shuttle Airlines plane experienced problems this morning with its landing gear at Barnstable Municipal Airport today causing it to land on its belly. The Hyannis fire department received a call at 8:22 am from the Federal Aviation Administration tower at the airport reporting that a twin Cessna had landed with its gear up on runway 33, said Hyannis fire Lt. Tom Kenney. It was not immediately clear whether the gear was ever deployed or collapsed on landing, he said. There were no reports of smoke or fire, he said. The plane skidded about 800 feet down the runway before coming to a stop, said airport manager Roland "Bud" Breault. The seven passengers, a dog and a crew member were uninjured, he said. The FAA and state Department of Transportation are investigating the accident, he said. The airport was shut down completely for about 20 minutes and the runway where the accident occurred was closed for about 4 1/2 hours, he said. "Right now it's under investigation," Breault said. A woman who answered the airline's phone said nobody was available to discuss the problem. Fire officials were just finishing up at the scene this afternoon, Kenney said. capecodonline.com
