Nine Dolphins Rescued Following Weeks of Mass Strandings on Cape Cod (02-01-12)
BREWSTER - Rescuers are at the scene of another dolphin stranding, this time in Brewster. A total of nine live common dolphins were found stranded this morning on a Brewster beach at Sea Pines Drive, said Kerry Branon with the International Fund for Animal Welfare. Early this afternoon IFAW was in the process of rescuing the dolphins from the low-tide mud flats by bringing the animals to rescue trailers, she said. They will do health assessments to determine if the dolphins are healthy enough to be released into deeper waters later this afternoon. This has been a particularly active year for dolphin strandings on Cape beaches. As of Monday, 102 dolphins had stranded since Jan. 12, according to IFAW statistics. Twenty-one have been successfully released back into local waters. One person was stabbed in a reported home invasion at a residence on Shore Road in Bourne, Massachusetts late Tuesday (01-13-12) evening. State and local police searched for the suspects for several hours. The suspects were reportedly wielding bats and possibly a gun.
