This small water colour painting is one of four that I painted whilst on vacation in North Truro, Cape Cod, a couple of weeks ago. The beaches there are very clean and generally there is very little human debris on the shoreline. But my husband and I were walking on the beach the day after a violent wind had really stirred things up and there was this lonely little shoe – which would probably be labled ‘derelict’ , according to maritime law – just sitting there, adorned with seaweed and a good dose of sand. Hubby rolled his eyes a little, but he is used to my eccentricities and questing for reference subject matter, so, he didn’t really say anything! I have a bit of a history in my art practice for exploring the subject of forlorn lost objects, anyway. I wonder what the story is, with this little pink shoe?? Did a petulant child kick it overboard from a boat? Or did it fall from a beach bag as a family packed up for the day? Were there tears on discovering its loss? Should we stretch our imaginations further and suppose a petulant mer-child chucked it out of the ocean on to the beach because they didn’t understand such a stupid human adornment – having no feet of their own!   What do YOU think??   Happy Friday! I won’t complain about the fact it is raining, here in Pennsylvania – because it has been stinky hot for the past few days and now it’s cool and my recently wilting English self is feeling much more peppy in the face of this drastic cool-off!
