It rained. Or approximated rain. Drizzle. I didn’t really have a rain plan. So the wonderful, hearty souls who joined us for the first Fieldwork Saturday took a walk together around Hamblen Island, and looked at the beauty of Duck Creek and the harbor. We mostly took photographs.
Toward the end of the session, a few of us spent some time drawing on our own. In my haste to grab supplies, I didn’t really look at the drawing gear I threw into my bag and, of course, the earth colors in the two oil pastel sets I brought with me were exhausted. So I did my best to make some drawings — setting aside most of my concerns about color. I immediately ordered new oil pastels — so next week’s work should be a little more naturalistic.
One of my quick drawings.
After the Fieldwork session, many of us gathered at the opening for Brett Gamache, Amanda Case Millis and Caroline Carney at AMZehnder Gallery. The work of these artists is extraordinary, and reflects the ethos of intensive fieldwork.
I was very fortunate, after the rain stopped, just past sunset, to do some additional fieldwork with Caroline at the Wellfleet pier. I often forget how much I enjoy the deep colors that emerge in the time after the sun goes down.
It’s supposed to rain again this Saturday, but I’m intrepid and will go out again. The new oil pastels arrived. So I’m good to go.

Fieldwork Saturdays in Wellfleet
Organized by Pete Hocking & AMZehnder Gallery
This summer, we’re inviting creative people — visual artists, photographers, writers, and others — to join us for community fieldwork sessions in Wellfleet on Saturday afternoons from 2:30 – 5 PM. This is not a workshop and there will be no instructor. Spending time in a place, looking deeply, taking notes, and allowing the place to soak into memory allows one to bring meaningful experience into the studio — and to ultimately work more intuitively. The sessions are also designed to strike up conversation and relationships among Outer Cape artists. You’re invited to look, to draw, to paint, to photograph, to take notes, to write — and especially to connect with other creative people in our incredible community. These sessions are free and you’re welcome to join us as your schedule permits. Come for one session or all sessions!
We’ll meet at AMZehnder Gallery at 25 Bank Street at 2:30 PM on Saturday and we’ll conclude the start of Gallery Night at 5 PM.
