HYANNIS, MASSACHUSETTS – [HN PHOTO NOTES]  –  The female victim could be heard saying that she didn’t know the woman who punched her before stealing her car and phone on Main Street early this morning. Right around bar closing – around 1:00 a.m. this morning – Barnstable Police patrol units were dispatched to Main Street after a female caller reported she was just attacked by someone who stole her vehicle.  (UPDATE: Until camera footage can be reviewed, the nature of the “attack” remains unknown… but police did not believe it was a “carjacking…”  but possibly more like an altercation between bar patrons who did not know each other… DEVELOPING…) Police arriving in the area began looking for a stolen white Audi A3. Moments later, a Barnstable Police sergeant found the stolen Audi A3 parked and unoccupied on Main Street near the intersection with Winter Street, about a block from where it was initially reported stolen. Investigating patrol officers called for a member of the sheriff’s crime scene unit to take photographs and to process the vehicle for fingerprints. While the sheriff’s deputy was dusting for fingerprints, a telephone “ping” assisted police officers in locating the victim’s cellphone in a neighboring town, after it apparently had been discarded on a street in Yarmouth, according to radio transmissions. The member of sheriff’s crime scene unit then responded to the Yarmouth scene to process the stolen phone for fingerprints. Back in Hyannis at the recovered stolen vehicle, a tow truck driver from Buckler’s Towing arrived to assist police with gaining access to the Audi. The victim’s car keys were also stolen during the attack (and they had not been located yet) … and the only way to get into the Audi as unobtrusively as possible was by using special tools. Once access was gained, the member of the sheriff’s crime scene unit returned to the Hyannis scene to dust the vehicle’s interior for fingerprints. While the investigation continued, the recovered stolen vehicle was towed to an undisclosed location for anti-theft purposes as the suspect could still be in possession of the keys. The investigation into the assault and theft is active and ongoing. Investigators are actively gathering key evidence, including surveillance camera footage which is expected to have captured the crime as it unfolded. DEVELOPING: Police were still investigating and processing evidence when these photo notes were written… HN will provide official updates and developments as they become available.
