WEST YARMOUTH, MASSACHUSETTS – [HN VIDEO NOTES] –  Police and firefighters responded to Route 28 in front of the Days Inn for a report of a car vs. bicyclist. The young woman who had been knocked off her bicycle was conscious and alert. She was banged up and holding her wrist, stating that she was scared… but fortunately her injuries were not believed to be serious or life-threatening. Yarmouth FD transported the young woman to Cape Cod Hospital for evaluation. At first it was uncertain whether she had been hit by a car or whether she had crashed on her own. But as officers cleared the scene, the crash was being referred to as a “hit-and-run,” according to radio transmissions. The Yarmouth Police Department is investigating. No further details available at the time of this report…. HN NOTE: The crash victim was referred to as a J-1 student by a source on scene. J-1 students are known to travel along Route 28 all day long on bicycles and scooters. Riding along Route 28 on a bike or scooter at any time can be dangerous, especially when drivers are not paying attention. It’s much more dangerous at night due to parts of Route 28 not being very well illuminated. It’s not unusual for J-1 students to be struck. While on scene, HN observed another young woman pass by on a scooter. The scooter had a red taillight… but it was her “hi-vis” florescent yellow traffic vest that really made her standout and much easier to see. Decent hi-vis traffic vests can be found online for under $10.00, some as low as $5.00. For bicyclists and scooter riders, an investment in being seen is definitely something worth thinking about… please take care of yourselves, precious young people! P.S. – Today’s Hytown Vignette is a brought to you by Stevie Wonder…  [CLICK IT/CRANK IT! HEADPHONES ABSOLUTELY OBLIGATORY!]
