YARMOUTH PORT, MASSACHUSETTS – [HN VIDEO NOTES] – Remarkably, the driver of a heavily damaged Toyota sedan walked away from a serious crash Thursday morning, without serious injuries or charges.
The single-vehicle crash happened shortly after midnight Thursday – 8/1/2024 – on Route 6A near the intersection with Mill Lane. The Toyota was apparently traveling east on Route 6A when it suddenly left the roadway and snapped a utility pole, leaving a large part of the pole dangling. The wires remained intact. According to sources at the scene, the driver, who didn’t seem impaired, says they had to swerve to avoid hitting something.
(HN NOTE: Not that it has anything to do with this particular crash – I really have no evidence to the contrary which would assign doubt to the driver’s story – but I’m reminded of one of my college roommates (who shall remain nameless) in the early ’80s. He had a bumper sticker that read, “I brake for hallucinations,” which made perfectly good sense in his case… the kid was an amiable, well-read madman who, as a sophisticated drug-induced time traveler, regularly ingested a notable amount of mind altering chemicals, including various acids and LSD – basically anything he could get his hands on… and “plausible deniability” was a daily thing during our travels to highbrow places like Symphany Hall in Boston, or wherever our “education” took us, with him fortunately having an overly protective father who was a very powerful, well-known attorney in this state… we were well-advised, to say the least… and it was my first lesson on the way things really work in the so-called “Commonwealth…” but I digress… I have no reason to doubt the driver’s story in the aforementioned crash. Really, I don’t! – And I’m just tickled nobody was badly hurt for a change…)
After snapping the pole, the Toyota traveled approximately another 500 to 600 feet before pulling onto Mill Lane and coming to a stop.
The driver was evaluated by Yarmouth FD but was not transported. The driver is not looking at any motor vehicle charges at this point in the investigation, according to sources on scene.
Route 6A needed to be closed for a period of time until the roadway could be made safe. After striking the pole, the Toyota continued on, leaving a long trail of fluids that needed to be dealt with. And Eversource was called to replace the utility pole…
