HYANNIS, MASSACHUSETTS – Police are investigating what caused a Toyota RAV4 to jump the curb and slam into a downtown popcorn business this afternoon. The crash happened sometime after 4:00 p.m. at 545 Main Street. The front of Smith Family Popcorn was heavily damaged from the crash. According to a Barnstable Police Department media statement, the Main Street 500 Block needed to be shut down beginning at High School Road while first responders worked the scene. One person was reportedly evaluated, but no official word on injuries or the cause of the crash. HN will provide updates as they become available. UPDATE: According to Captain David Webb of the Hyannis Fire Department, the driver (and sole occupant of the vehicle) was an adult male who was transported to Cape Cod Hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.  Officials are still investigating whether the crash was caused by a medical emergency.  According to Captain Webb, there were no other injuries on scene… and all occupants of Smith Family Popcorn were safely in a separate part of the building when the vehicle slammed into its front wall.  The building had major damage and will have to remain closed until structural repairs are completed.  (A tough blow for a popcorn business at the beginning of the tourist season…) The following HN Video contains police and fire emergency radio transmissions, along with crash scene images and video (w/ HN edits) sent in by Hyannis News Readers.
