HYANNIS, MASSACHUSETTS –  Barnstable Police have been investigating the shooting and attempted murder of a 41-year-old man at 273 Winter Street this past Friday evening. For background, HN Video, and earlier details from the scene, CLICK HERE to read HN’s initial report entitled, “SHOOTING VICTIM RUSHED TO CCH W/ GSW… THEN SHOOTER SHOWED UP AT PLYMOUTH PD, COPS SAY” This latest HN report is based on a six-page report filed by Patrolman Lorne Fellows of the Barnstable Police Department. The first officers on scene last Friday evening found the blood covered victim of multiple apparent gunshots wounds. The victim had just climbed into the back of a Barnstable Animal Control Officer’s van which just happened to be in the area, on Locust Street. Officers on scene (and later at Cape Cod Hospital) noted the victim’s apparent gunshot wounds to the back of his head, jaw, left shoulder, abdomen and lower back. The victim reportedly was able to tell officers that his roommate, later identified as Paulo Farias, had just shot him multiple times at 273 Winter Street. Believing Farias could still be inside, patrol officers and SWAT surrounded the 273 Winter Street residence. While clearing the domicile, four tenants were called outside by officers, including Paulo Farias’ mother. (see HN Video, below) The suspect, Paulo Farias, was not located inside the 273 Winter Street residence. Inside the residence, SWAT operatives discovered a large amount of blood inside a first-floor bathroom. Multiple shell casings were also located on the bathroom floor. (Upon later obtaining a search warrant, the shell casings were collected and determined to be 9mm. Fragmented and intact bullets were also later collected as evidence. Investigators also found at least two bullet holes inside the bathroom… but no firearm was recovered during the search of the residence.) At around 8:10 p.m., investigators at the Winter Street scene were speaking with Farias’ wife when she received a phone call from the suspect. During the phone call, Farias reportedly expressed his desire to turn himself in. While speaking with Farias during the call, a Barnstable Police Detective could hear him telling someone else that he wanted to turn himself in. It turns out, Farias was off-Cape in the lobby of the Plymouth Police Department, speaking with officers there as well. As earlier reported, Paulo Farias (see above mugshot) had entered the lobby at Plymouth Police Headquarters, took off his shirt, knelt down, and lifted his hands above his head while holding his phone, according to a Plymouth Police statement. While Lieutenant George Driscoll and Officer Kyle Kreitzer of the Plymouth PD approached the kneeling man, they could hear a man on the phone identifying himself as a Barnstable Police Detective, telling them the shirtless man had just shot someone and was wanted for attempted murder in Hyannis… and to take him into custody forthwith. The Plymouth officers did as their brother in Barnstable had asked, and Farias was reportedly arrested without incident. Paulo Farias, 26, of Hyannis was turned over to the custody of police back in Barnstable, charged with a litany of serious felonies, including attempted murder. Farias had reportedly traveled to the Plymouth PD with his friend, later identified as Carlos Dias, in a black Honda Accord that was seized and towed back to the Barnstable PD where it was secured in an evidence bay. At BPD Headquarters, Barnstable Police Patrolwoman Denise Baldner, Detective Johnson, and Officer Fellows sat down and had a recorded interview with Carlos Dias. Officer Baldner assisted with Portuguese translation. “Dias explained that he was having dinner at “Ronny’s Pizza” located at 11 Ridgewood Avenue in Hyannis, MA and received several phone calls from a man he knows as “PC”. Dias stated that when he answered the phone call “PC” stated that he needed help from him. Dias agreed and later met Farias in the area of Honey-Dew Donuts. Investigators are aware that Honey-Dew Donuts is at the opposite end of Ridgewood Ave, Hyannis. Investigators provided BPD Form 06-12 (Portuguese version) – Consent to Search, which he acknowledged and signed. During the search of Dias’ vehicle, no firearm was recovered.” While multiple residents of 273 Winter Street were later being interviewed at BPD Headquarters, one of the tenants, who had been in the basement at the time of the shooting, recalled hearing approximately four gunshots during the ordeal. A blue Ford Econovan registered to Farias’ wife was later located parked in the lot of the Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority, about a block from Ridgewood Ave where Farias had earlier met with Carlos Dias. The Ford van was towed back to the BPD and secured in an evidence bay pending a search warrant. A computer check revealed that neither Farias nor his wife had previously or currently possessed any licenses to carry firearms. Sunday afternoon, investigators were made aware that Paulo Farias (while in custody) was wishing to provide evidence in relation to Friday’s shooting. Officer Fellows and Detective Johnson conducted a post-arrest interview with Farias. Officer Eduardo Somera provided Portuguese translation during the interview. The following is the police report summation of the interview included in Officer Fellows’ report: “Farias stated that he and [the shooting victim] have lived in the same household for approximately 4 months and during this time there have been many incidents between the two in regards to the safety of his family within his home. Farias stated that [the shooting victim] shares the same floor as Farias and his Family which includes a bathroom and kitchen area. Farias stated that due to the incidents occurring with [the victim] in his home he installed a security camera in his kitchen facing the bathroom door which was next to his bedroom door as well as his children’s bedroom door. Farias stated that he witnessed [the victim] on his security camera exit the bathroom of the residence and continuously expose his naked body to his wife [ ] and his sons […] while they were in Farias’ bedroom. Farias went into detail and explained that he viewed [the victim’s] lower half covered by a towel while [the victim] exited the shared bathroom. Farias then stated that he observed through the camera footage [the victim] to continuously expose himself right outside of the bedroom door in the common area shared by [the victim] and Farias’ family. Farias then stated that [the victim] then faced the door of Farias’ bedroom and continued to open his towel exposing his naked body to Farias’ bedroom door. During this time Farias stated that his wife and two sons were in his bedroom while [the shooting victim] was continuously adjusting his towel exposing himself.” The report continues with Farias being asked about what happened the day of the shooting – Friday, March 15, 2024.  Farias reportedly told investigators he had returned to the house alone after his wife and children had left to drop his mother-in-law off at the boat returning to Martha’s Vineyard. The police report summation continues as follows: “While he was home with [the victim], Farias stated that he wanted to confront [the victim] about his actions in regards to the video footage he had on his phone. Farias stated that he knocked on [the victim’s] door in an attempt to confront him. Farias stated that he wanted to confront [the victim] in the area where he witnessed him exposing himself in front of his bedroom door. Farias stated that he became concerned when [the victim] did not come out of his room for approximately four to five minutes. Farias stated that after [the victim] exited his bedroom he was waiting for [the victim] in the kitchen to confront him. Farias stated that he witnessed [the victim] exit his room and approach him while [the victim] held his left pocket. Farias stated that when he confronted [the victim] with the video evidence he had of him exposing himself [the victim] became very defensive and then brandished what he believed to be a knife out of his left pocket. Farias stated that after he observed [the victim] brandish the knife he “just blasted him”. Farias later described this firearm to be a small, black, 9mm firearm that he obtained from an unknown male that was going to Brazil. Farias stated he wanted to show investigators the evidence of [the victim] exposing himself on the camera footage he had on his cellphone. Farias was provided with a Consent to Search Form (Portuguese) to which he willingly gave permission to search his cellphone to collect evidence in relation to his statements.” Paulo Farias, 26, of 273 Winter Street in Hyannis, was charged with: –  4 counts of A&B WITH DANGEROUS WEAPON: FIREARM, –  ASSAULT TO MURDER, FIREARM-ARMED, –  A&B, SERIOUS BODILY INJURY, –  FIREARM, CARRY WITHOUT LICENSE, –  firing FIREARM WITHIN 500FT OF DWELLING, –  FIREARM, CARRY WITHOUT LICENSE LOADED, –  and possessing ammunition without an FID CARD. The investigation reportedly remains active and ongoing. According to the report, the 9mm firearm has not yet been found.
