“Just breathing isn’t living!”

HYANNIS, MASSACHUSETTS – [HN PHOTO NOTE] – There are still Cape Codders on the street. The 57-year-old homeless woman in the above HN photo taken early this morning – 2/14/24 – rode out the recent nor’easter on a slushy Main Street sidewalk as plows and sanding trucks worked around her. Good Samaritans dropped off warm beverages, even one time when she was dozing… and she told HN she’s very grateful for the kindness she receives from complete strangers. But she also says this is her first time homeless and the system isn’t meeting her needs. She told HN she has been stolen from at one shelter… and that she feels safer and less hassled on the sidewalk.
She also told me she doesn’t understand why she’s on the streets when she has been paying into the U.S. system since her first job at age 14… (her last job was working in nursing before becoming disabled…) and now, her government is putting up and feeding complete strangers from other countries…
… and frankly, I can’t explain it either!
I’m not a member of our well-paid government, the ones who are the “experts” at dealing with such issues, but it does seem to me that if we diverted more of our energy and tax dollars currently being handed out to migrants, undocumented criminals, and foreign conflicts overseas… and addressed our very real poverty related issues here, in the United States, we could perhaps meet more of our downtrodden where they are, help them rise up, and thus become be a better example for the rest of the world.
Remember the following Jesus quote? It, in my opinion, sums up why we shouldn’t be telling the rest of the world how to live before we do an exceptional job taking care of our issues at home. And not to get all “biblical” on you, but here it is:
“Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when you yourself fail to see the plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.”
~ Luke 6:41…
