HYANNIS, Massachusetts – According to an arrest report filed by Sergeant Kevin Fullam of the Barnstable Police Department, early Friday morning – 1/26/2024 @ 12:48 a.m. – he was dispatched to the area of 1500 Iyannough Road (Route 132) for an accident involving a Barnstable Police cruiser. According to the report, Barnstable Police Patrolman Jian Barcelo was seated inside his cruiser on a traffic stop when a vehicle suddenly slammed into his cruiser from behind, jolting him and his cruiser forward. According to Sergeant Fullam’s report and statements made by Officer Barcelo, the emergency lights on his fully marked Barnstable Police cruiser (E-219) were “fully activated and operating normally” at the time of the crash. Patrolman Barcelo reported having neck pain and was eventually transported to Cape Cod Hospital for further treatment. (NOTE: Patrolman Barcelo was observed back on patrol duty by HN as of this morning – Wednesday, 1/31/2024.) When officers spoke with the other driver – later identified as Eric Boyd, 42, of Hyannis – they reportedly could “detect the overwhelming odor of an alcoholic beverage emanating from inside” his vehicle. (Boyd was reportedly the sole occupant of his vehicle at the time of the crash.)  Boyd was also reportedly slurring his words when he stated, “I don’t drink, I am sober.” But according to the report, Boyd was unsteady on his feet, stumbling, and needed to lean against his car to regain his balance. The reported observations of officers seemed to contradict Boyd’s initial statement that he was sober and didn’t drink. Finally, when Boyd was asked to demonstrate a nine step walk and turn field sobriety test, he reportedly abruptly turned, put his hands behind his back and stated, “just arrest me, I am drunk.” Officers requested that Boyd continue the field sobriety testing despite him reportedly changing his tune. Boyd reportedly continued and was unsteady and unbalanced while participating in the remaining field sobriety testing. And he was subsequently placed under arrest for suspicion of operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol. Boyd’s Nissan Juke was towed from the scene, along with the damaged Barnstable Police cruiser. During the investigation, it was reportedly learned that Boyd did not have an active driver’s license. Back at police headquarters, Boyd reportedly failed a breathalyzer test, blowing a BAC level of .24%, which is three times the legal limit. Eric Alan Boyd, 42, of Hyannis was charged with Operating Under the Influence of Alcohol, Operating to Endanger, and Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle. Boyd was issued license suspension paperwork and a copy of the breath test paperwork was submitted along with Sergeant Fullam’s arrest report. * The above details are based on information from a Barnstable PD arrest report. The defendant is presumed to be innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
