HYANNIS, Massachusetts –  Shortly after 6:30 p.m. Monday evening –  1/15/2024 –  members of the Barnstable Police Department assisted operatives from the state police violent fugitive apprehension unit as they descended on a Hyannis residence to capture an armed and dangerous murder suspect.  Jamal Bazile, 18, of Brockton was found with a handgun when taken into custody.  During the arrest, Bazile reportedly became combative and assaulted officers.  Bazile was finally secured and reportedly lugged back to Brockton to face several felony charges, including murder, according to a police source.  According to a statement by Plymouth County District Attorney Tim Cruz, “On Friday, at approximately 7:24 p.m., Brockton Police were dispatched to the Hibachi Sushi Supreme Buffet at 718 Crescent Street for reports of a shooting inside the restaurant.” The victim, 22-year-old Joe Araujo, was shot in cold blood while seated in a booth inside the restaurant.  Araujo suffered point-blank gunshot wounds to his abdomen and leg.  He was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital where he was pronounced dead from his injuries. According to District Attorney Cruz, “Brockton Police contacted the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit assigned to the Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office and an investigation commenced.  Detectives worked throughout the weekend to develop information on the case.  Police spoke with witnesses, and collected surveillance footage, including video of the shooting captured on restaurant cameras.” “A man wearing a distinct jacket and sneakers, later identified as Bazile, was captured on restaurant video dropping a to-go box and pulling out a firearm, shooting the victim three times, striking him twice,” according to the DA’s statement.  As a result of collected evidence, Detectives were reportedly able to develop probable cause and obtain an arrest warrant for two suspects, Bazile and a second suspect named Nathan Veiga, age 22.  Police reportedly executed a search warrant at Veiga’s home where they located a “distinct jacket” believed to have been worn by Bazile when he allegedly shot Joe Araujo.  Veiga was reportedly taken into custody by the Brockton Police.  Monday evening –  1/15/2024 –  Bazile was located at a Hyannis home and taken into custody after reportedly becoming combative and assaulting police officers.  He was found with a 9mm Smith and Wesson handgun, loaded with four rounds, according to sources.  Tuesday, in Brockton District Court, Jamal Bazile pleaded not guilty in the shooting death of Joe Araujo.  Bazile pleaded not guilty to one count of Murder, one count of Possession of a Firearm, one count of Possession of Ammunition, and one count of Discharge of a Firearm.  Nathan Veiga pleaded not guilty to one count of Murder and one count of Accessory Before the Fact. Both Bazile and Veiga were ordered held without bail by Judge Michael Vitali.  Assistant District Attorney Jennifer Sprague is handling the prosecution investigated by the Massachusetts State Police and Brocton Police.  Bazile and Veiga are due back in court on February 13 for a probable cause hearing.  *  The initial details contained in the above report are based on a media statement from the Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office, along with information from police sources. The defendants are presumed to be innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
