WEST YARMOUTH, Massachusetts – [HN NOTES] – A man dressed in a jailbird costume, along with his female passenger, fortunately escaped serious injury after their car left the roadway, slammed through several fences, and struck an apartment building early this morning. The costume was convincing and it appeared like a possible “jailbreak,” but it wasn’t! The crash happened around 1:30 a.m. on Route 28 near the intersection with Wendward Way. Both occupants were evaluated by Yarmouth FD Rescue after airbag deployment but were not transported. Several sections of fencing were completely destroyed when the vehicle left its travel lane and hopped the sidewalk curbing on the opposite side of Route 28. (Luckily, it did not strike an oncoming vehicle head-on…) The apartment building was struck, but the damage was minimal. A couple of men, both apparently dressed in “Woody the Cowboy” costumes, showed to up to give their “jailbird” friend a hand. The good-natured, rootin’-toot·in’ cowboy duo offered to wrangle and tow the damaged vehicle, but police had their own tow truck in enroute and told the friendly cowpokes ‘much obliged,’ their services would not be necessary. The matching Woodys later told HN they had all been at the same Halloween Party prior to the crash. And during our chitchat, everyone agreed that the most important “good news” was that nobody was seriously hurt. A police sergeant gave the female passenger a courtesy ride home. The “jailbird” driver was issued a traffic citation for criminal motor vehicle offenses, according to radio transmissions. He was driven from the scene by the twin Woodys. In a separate, unrelated matter, the jailbird and one of the cowboys were pulled over by a state trooper in Hyannis, just a couple of miles from the West Yarmouth crash scene. The vehicle they were traveling in was towed for being either unregistered, uninsured or both… HN is working on the official details relating to the separate incident involving the Halloween goers, and will provide updates as they become available. It apparently doesn’t pay to be dressed up and playing the part of a jailbird, even when it’s just a Halloween Costume… … poor jailbird guy. But the bottom line is nobody was hurt (this time), and that’s really the best news to come out of this wild scene.   The Yarmouth PD is investigating the cause of the crash. * The initial details contained in the above report are based on police radio transmissions and information on scene. The defendant is presumed to be innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. The following HN Video highlights the wild crash scene… [HN VIDEO – PRESS PLAY] P.S. – Today’s Hytown Vignette is a brought to you by Thin Lizzy…  [CLICK IT/CRANK IT!
