WOMAN HURT AFTER CRASHING INTO JAPANESE CEDAR IN WEST DENNIS [HN PHOTOS]

              WEST DENNIS, Massachusetts – A young woman was transported to Cape Cod Hospital after her car left the roadway and struck a tree early this morning. The single vehicle crash was discovered by a Dennis policeman on routine patrol. It happened on School Street in the area of Ridgedale Lane, near a bend in the road, at around 1:30 a.m. The injured woman was placed into a Dennis FD ambulance. She appeared conscious and alert when HN saw her. She was wearing a cervical collar while sitting in a reclined position on a stretcher. Her injuries were not believed to be life-threatening. The Audi sedan had substantial damage from slamming head-on into the well-rooted Japanese Cedar. A source on scene said the tree appeared to be a Japanese Cryptomeria (and according to online photos, that appears to be an accurate assessment). There are a number of slightly differing varieties of Japanese Cryptomeria, and the tree’s popular hardwood is often used in construction and furniture projects back in Japan. The tree’s name “Cryptomeria” comes from the Greek words “krypt,” which means to hide, and “meris,” which means “a part,” according to online sources. These hardy trees are often used as screens and border plants. The well-established hardwood suffered damaged bark and several snapped lower branches. The driver will apparently be receiving a citation for motor vehicle violations, according to radio transmissions. The Dennis Police Department is investigating the cause of the crash.
