HYANNIS – [HN NOTES & MULLINGS ON THE MATTER] – This is a story about a dog…
… and an owner’s bad behavior.
And as the story goes, late Wednesday evening, Barnstable Police received a call about an alleged drunk woman on the side of a neighborhood street. The caller was worried the woman was about to get into her car and drive.
Police quickly arrived and made contact with the alleged drunk. HN was also in the area and arrived right when officers learned the woman had a warrant for her arrest, for traffic violations.
The woman was standing outside of the vehicle with the driver’s side door open when officers informed her about the warrant, telling her that she was under arrest. As you’ll see and hear in the following HN Video, the woman immediately began to verbally and physically protest her arrest. And while officers were trying to place her in the backseat of a cruiser, she began to yell and forcefully resist them. Officers repeatedly ordered her to get into the cruiser and she refused, telling them ‘no’ and demanding to speak with their sergeant. And she allegedly kicked one of the officers at one point.
Meanwhile, the woman’s little dog left the vehicle’s backseat to see what was going. The dog appeared concerned about the situation, but at no time appeared to be upset at officers.
At one point, the little dog came running over to me, wagging its tail, while glancing back at her owner who was screaming and trying to plow her way past both officers. In HN’s view, the poor dog seemed alarmed about her owner’s yelling and pushing.
The entire scene was extremely loud and disturbing – to say the least – and the racket even caused an uninvolved man to exit his residence to investigate. The unwelcomed upheaval in the normally quiet family neighborhood had all occurred shortly before midnight, in the middle of the work week!
Officers were able to persuade the woman to finally sit inside the cruiser like an adult. She was not injured. The only person possibly injured during the ruckus, would have been the policeman who was allegedly kicked by the raging brute.
The suspect was transported to police headquarters to be booked on her arrest warrant. She was also looking at being booked for resisting arrest. Officers were also considering whether to charge her with A&B on a police officer.
During the entire commotion, the little dog can be seen returning to its vehicle and hopping into the driver’s seat, as if indicating she had had enough of her owner’s bombastic behavior.
Again, poor dog!
Instead of sending the dog to the pound for mom’s sins, one of the officers placed her in the front seat of his cruiser, to ride shotgun with him back to the station… where she could be reunited with her owner. Thats if her owner managed to calm down and bail herself out, without picking up additional charges.
NOTE: The Barnstable Police keeps a kennel at their station, because many of the employees there also love dogs. And I wouldn’t be surprised if others working that evening also felt bad for the “poor little lamb” who had just witnessed its owner behaving like some inebriated rabid mutt.
But again, the aforementioned are just HN’s “notes and mullings” on the matter. All suspects are of course innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt at Barnstable District Court.
The following HN Video shows some of Wednesday evening’s tumultuous breach of the peace, where an innocent dog at least got to ride shotgun.
