HYANNIS, Massachusetts – Sunday morning – July 30, 2023 – members of the Barnstable Police patrol division rushed to the “Karibbean Lounge” at 662 Main Street, for a report of man holding up a pistol. Patrolman Lorne Fellow’s report continues as follows: “At approximately 1:17 A.M. Ptl. Gustfson and I were dispatched to the Hyannis Plaza Hotel (662 Main St) for a report of a male party wearing a white shirt that pointed a gun at the reporting male party. NOTE: BPD Dispatchers advised units responding that the male party who pointed the gun was wearing a white Louis Vuiton t-shirt and was attempting to get into a vehicle. Upon my arrival I observed Ptl. DeMinico advising a male party matching the description given by BPD Dispatchers, later identified as Brishnell Dawkins, to show him his hands. NOTE: Dawkins was wearing a white Louis Vuiton t-shirt when I arrived and saw him in the parking lot. Dawkins was leaning against a vehicle in the parking lot of the Hyannis Plaza Hotel and was holding his hands at his waist. I made my way over to Dawkins and advised him to put his hands behind his back and to keep them where I could see them. Dawkins appeared to be extremely intoxicated, barely being able to hold himself up as he used a vehicle to keep himself upright. Dawkins was then placed in handcuffs for officer safety pending an investigation.” Patrolman DeMinico reportedly had observed Dawkins in possession of a firearm that he had allegedly thrown in the direction of nearby some bushes. Patrolman Brody DeMinico’s report continues as follows: “I observed a male matching that description walking in-between vehicles in the parking lot, approximately 15 vehicles into the lot from the Main St. entrance, along the gravel median that divides the parking lot. Using parked vehicles as cover, I kept my distance from Dawkins, who was at this point in time approximately 10 yards from my position leaning up against a vehicle. With my hand on my department issued firearm, I cleared the first and second level retention of my holster and ordered Dawkins to show me his hands and walk slowly towards my direction. While Dawkins turned around to face me he made a movement towards his [waistline], as to retrieve something. As Dawkins did this, I observed a black object fall from his hand, I then heard the sound of a metal object hitting gravel and pavement…” Officers reportedly searched the immediate area and located a black pistol lying on the pavement underneath a Toyota Camry. The firearm was a black Glock 19 pistol. Officers reportedly spoke with a security guard who had been working a function at the hotel. The security guard reportedly had an exchange of words with Dawkins as he was leaving the event. When Dawkins was reportedly advised to leave area, he allegedly pointed a pistol at the security guard and said, “I’m going to #&%*@^%! kill you.” That’s when the security guard decided to call police. Police conducted a “showup” with the suspect, and the security guard reportedly positively identified Dawkins as the person who had just pointed the firearm at him. The recovered Glock 19 reportedly had one 9mm round in the chamber, and five additional rounds its magazine. The firearm was photographed and collected as evidence by a member of the Barnstable County Sheriff’s Crime Scene Unit. The pistol, magazine, and all 6 9mm rounds were reportedly brought to the BCI Crime Lab for DNA testing. Another witness at the event reportedly told officers he had observed Dawkins with a pistol in his waistband. As Dawkins was leaving the hotel, he was reportedly witnessed allegedly grabbing the pistol and stating, “I’m going to kill people here.” Brishnell P. Dawkins, 30, of Hyannis was arrested and charged with: 1. Assault with a Dangerous Weapon (Firearm), 2. Carrying a Firearm Without a License, 3. Carrying a loaded Firearm Without a License, and 4. Threat to Commit a Crime. Dawkins was also held in Protective Custody due to his alleged high level of intoxication. Bail at the Barnstable Police lockup was set at $10,040. Dawkins was expected to be arraigned today at Barnstable District Court. There were no further details available at the time of this report. Check back for updates.
