Happy to spend some time at Cape Cod again, I offered to cat sit for a week in July while my son and his wife visited friends in another state. The summer crowds were in full force, and there were hour-long lines or reservations required at restaurants in Falmouth. (Pictures of downtown and nearby Woods Hole in a previous blog post at Falmouth, Woods Hole.) A nature trail with croaking frogs made for a convenient shortcut to the library and shops from their house. I took long walks or drives during the days, ate tasty seafood dinners out, and spent late afternoons and evenings relaxing with the cat at home.

Parking was full at most beach destinations, so I walked. The Shining Sea Bikeway was originally a railroad route to Woods Hole from 1872 to 1965. Now it’s a quiet green-bordered stripe of pavement frequented by bikers, walkers, skaters and skateboarders, and baby carriers, that spans the western end of Cape Cod north to south, paralleling the Vineyard Sound coast. It was a short walk to find the bike path from downtown Falmouth.
I followed the path south to Falmouth Beach. It always warms my heart to walk the sands in bare feet and watch the waves roll in, gentle on this day. Unfortunately, one couldn’t walk along the sandy shoreline to Surf Beach. I had to walk along the road because the stretch that connects the two is private.
The low fencing prevents flightless Piping Plover and Least Tern chicks from wandering into the road.
On the way back, I didn’t find the bike path again. Instead, I was pleased to discover this pop-up eatery for a lobster roll.
My companion for the week was the affectionate orange tabby Malcolm, also known as Mr. Meows or just Meows. Here he is playing with a favorite toy. I miss having pets!
